At what point does a guided motorcycle tour become an adventure? Ask 100 riders and you’ll probably get 100 different answers. As a tried-and-true adventure motorcycle tour outfit with a few million miles under our belts, we figured it was time to weigh in.

Do adventure tours require ADV bikes? Do they have to go off-road? Is there actually a meaningful difference between a typical guided motorcycle tour and a proper adventure tour? Below we’ll answer some of the questions we hear most often about the world’s most rewarding travel experience.

Is Every Guided Motorcycle Tour An Adventure?

This is a fair question, because “adventure” gets slapped onto just about everything these days.

There are plenty of excellent guided motorcycle tours in places like the Alps, Route 66, and other famous riding destinations. The roads can be spectacular, the scenery beautiful, and the trip worth every penny. But our idea of an adventure tour asks a little more from the rider.

We like routes that make you pay attention. We like roads that change character halfway through the day. We like places where the weather, traffic, altitude, culture, or terrain can throw something unexpected into the mix. We like itineraries that leave enough room to stop, explore, talk to people, and occasionally follow something interesting that was never on the schedule.

That is the difference for us.

Adventure usually involves some uncertainty. It may involve getting outside your normal routine, riding roads you would never find at home, dealing with changing conditions, or simply realizing that the plan you started the morning with has evolved by lunchtime.

Whether your route is 99% paved or 100% dirt, we build plenty of riding, discovery, and room for the unexpected into our tours. We want the road to matter, but we also want what happens between the riding sections to matter just as much.

Do Adventure Motorcycle Tours Require An “Adventure” Bike?

That’s gonna be an emphatic “No” from us.

The motorcycle can certainly influence the kind of terrain you tackle, but adventure has never depended on a particular badge stuck to the fuel tank.

We’re big fans of ADV motorcycles, and there is a reason they work so well in Ecuador. They handle pavement, broken roads, dirt, steep grades, luggage, altitude, and long days without asking too many questions.

Thrilling? Yep. Risky? You bet. A little crazy? Absolutely.

That is why we look at the rider, the terrain, and the trip as a whole rather than obsessing over motorcycle categories.

Do All Adventure Motorcycle Tours Include Off-Road Riding?

No. Dirt helps, though.

We love getting off the pavement because some of the best places in Ecuador are reached on roads that never make it into a normal tourist itinerary. Dirt roads lead into farming communities, high mountain valleys, remote villages, cloudforest, and parts of the country where buses and conventional tours rarely go.

But pavement can deliver plenty of adventure too.

Still, after years of riding and guiding here, we have found that leaving the pavement often opens the door to some of Ecuador’s most memorable places.

The road gets narrower. The traffic disappears. The scenery gets bigger. You may find yourself riding through a farming community, crossing a river, climbing a rough mountain road, or stopping somewhere you never would have reached on a main highway.

Off-road riding brings an extra challenge, and with that challenge often comes a bigger reward.

So what actually earns a motorcycle tour the adventure label?

For us, it comes down to the experience. The motorcycle matters. The roads matter. The destination matters. But the best adventure tours also have enough uncertainty, discovery, challenge, and contact with the country for the trip to develop a life of its own.

A proper adventure motorcycle tour should push you a little beyond what you normally do at home. That might mean riding a road that demands more concentration than you expected, navigating an unfamiliar culture, dealing with a sudden weather change, tackling a surface you have not ridden before, or simply spending the day somewhere that makes your normal routine feel very far away.

Adventure also needs room to breathe.

We work hard to avoid turning our tours into military schedules where every stop is timed and every rider is hustled back onto the bike because the itinerary says it is 2:17 PM.

We want you to stop.

Talk to people. Walk around. Look at something interesting. Eat lunch somewhere local. Take the photo. Follow the road a little farther if there is time and the group wants to see what is around the bend.
