Know Your Riders

Before you plan the route, know who you’re riding with.

Are they experienced dirt riders who want technical tracks and long days? Are they more interested in smooth pavement, mountain twisties, and a relaxed pace? Is everyone comfortable riding at altitude? How much dirt is too much dirt? How many hours in the saddle is actually fun for the group?

You also need to think about fitness, confidence, and pace. One rider may be perfectly happy standing on the pegs for hours while another is already cooked after a long stretch of rough road.

If you’re leading the group, those differences matter.

The same goes for what happens off the bikes.

If the group is spending the day cruising paved mountain roads, a zip-line, jungle hike, or other active stop can add some fun to the itinerary.

If you’ve just spent a hard day negotiating dirt tracks across the Andes, a hot spring soak and a good dinner may be a much better idea than another three-hour hike.

Build the Ride Around the Group

Start easy.

The first day should give everyone time to get comfortable with the motorcycle, the roads, the altitude, the traffic, and the general rhythm of riding in Ecuador.

Once the group settles in, you can introduce longer days or more technical riding while everyone still has plenty of energy.

Then give people a chance to recover.

A rest day, a shorter riding day, or an easier stretch in the middle of the trip can make a huge difference, especially if the route includes off-road sections, high altitude, or long days in the saddle.

It also helps to finish the trip with enough energy left to enjoy it. Nobody wants the final two days to feel like a forced march back to Quito.

Budget matters too.

Some riders are happy with simple hotels, homestays, and camping. Others want a hot shower, a good bed, and a decent meal waiting at the end of the day.

Figure that out before you start booking anything.
