Riding High: The Epic Journey of Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental and Their Fight Against Misleading Brand Copycats

We have spent years making Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental as transparent as possible. Riders should know exactly who they are booking with, what they are paying for, where they are going, and who is responsible for getting the job done.

Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental started in 2009 as a tiny bicycle and scooter rental shop in Cuenca. We had a few bikes, a small shop, and a pretty big idea about what motorcycle travel in Ecuador could become.

There was no shortcut from there to here.

We had to ride the country. We had to learn the roads. We had to figure out which motorcycles could take a beating and which ones looked great in a brochure but became a headache after enough rental kilometers. We had to find the hotels riders actually wanted to arrive at after a long day, build relationships throughout Ecuador, make mistakes, fix them, and keep going.

Over the years, that little shop grew into Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental, an award-winning motorcycle, bicycle, and 4x4 rental and tour company offering guided and self-guided motorcycle tours throughout Ecuador.

We have accumulated millions of Ecuadorian tarmac and dirt miles, developed routes all over the country, built a large motorcycle fleet, and welcomed riders from around the world.

None of that happened because we came up with a clever company name and bought some Google ads.

It happened because we did the work.

We Built Ecuador Freedom in Plain Sight

One thing has been important to us from the beginning: riders should be able to see what they are buying before they send us their money.

That is why our website contains detailed information about our motorcycles, equipment, routes, hotels, riding conditions, safety procedures, tracking systems, support, packing, weather, staff, and the way our tours actually operate.

Want to know what kind of roads you will ride? We show you.

Want to know where you will sleep? We tell you.

Want to know how the motorcycles are equipped, what happens if you have a mechanical problem, how our tracking system works, or what kind of support you receive on a self-guided tour? It is there.

We have put an enormous amount of time into providing that information because motorcycle travelers are not buying a $40 sightseeing excursion. They are flying to another continent, spending serious money, climbing onto one of our motorcycles, and trusting us with a significant piece of their vacation.

They deserve straight answers.

The Ecuador Freedom Name Took Years to Build

We have also spent years participating in and supporting the international adventure motorcycle community. We have worked with publications and communities such as ADV Rider, supported motorcycle events and rallies, worked with organizations including the Motorcycle Relief Project, and opened our doors to independent motorcycle travelers passing through Ecuador.

At home, we created our Ride for a Purpose program so riders could help us bring school supplies to rural schools and communities along our routes.

That reputation belongs to the people who built it: our staff, our riders, our guides, our mechanics, the communities we work with, and everybody who trusted a little motorcycle company in Ecuador enough to come ride with us.

So yes, we care about what happens to the Ecuador Freedom name.

And Then Customers Started Going to the Wrong Shop

Another motorcycle rental and tour company in Ecuador operates under the name “Ecuador Bike Rental” and is associated with Sleipner.

To be completely clear: Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental and Ecuador Bike Rental are two separate, unaffiliated companies.

Different owners. Different staff. Different motorcycles. Different tours. Different businesses.

And, apparently, WAAAAY different ideas about ethics, transparency, and honesty.

We would probably not be writing this article if the similarities ended with the names. But they did not.

Our own customers have gone to their shop believing it was ours. This has happened more than once.

We have had one of their customers arrive at our shop thinking they had booked with us.

We have received emails from travelers confused about which company they were dealing with.

Customers have posted reviews of Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental on the other company’s Google and Tripadvisor pages, and reviews intended for the other business have ended up on ours.

At some point, when customers are physically walking into the wrong building, this stops being an abstract branding discussion.

We could argue all day about whether that kind of branding and advertising is confusing. We would rather show you an actual example and let you decide for yourself.

We Don't Have a Problem With Competition

Motorcycle tour companies compete. That is business.

There should be choices in Ecuador. Different companies have different motorcycles, different routes, different pricing, different levels of support, and different ideas about what makes a good trip.

If someone spends an evening comparing us with another operator and decides the other company is the better choice, fine. We may disagree with the decision, but at least the rider made one.

What bothers us is when somebody believes they booked with Ecuador Freedom and discovers that they did not.

We have seen branding and advertising close enough to ours to create confusion, including advertising associated with the phrase “Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental.” We could spend the rest of this article arguing about motives, but that would miss the useful part.

The useful part is what has actually happened.

Wrong shop. Wrong review page. Wrong company contacted. Customers wondering whether the two businesses are related.

They are not.

Confusion Is the Opposite of How We Run This Company

This is the part that probably irritates us most.

We have spent years trying to remove uncertainty from the booking process. Our entire approach has been to give riders more information, more detail, and more opportunity to compare what we offer before committing to anything.

We show our hotels because we want you to know where you are staying.

We describe our roads because we want you to understand what you are signing up to ride.

We explain our safety procedures because if something goes wrong in a foreign country, vague assurances are not much of a plan.

We show the motorcycles, luggage, support systems, route information, weather, packing advice, and the people behind the company because we want customers to make an informed decision.

That transparency has cost us plenty of time and money over the years. We think it is worth it.

We would rather lose a booking to another operator because a rider carefully compared the two companies and chose them than gain a booking because somebody was confused about who we were.

That is a lousy way to build a reputation, and reputations are much harder to repair than websites.

We Built This Company the Slow Way

There is nothing glamorous about most of what went into building Ecuador Freedom.

We bought motorcycles. We maintained them. We broke things. We fixed them. We tested roads. We found better roads. We learned where riders struggled and changed our routes. We stayed in hotels that looked promising and discovered they were not. We found others nobody had heard of and went back year after year.

We figured out how to support riders hundreds of kilometers from Quito. We built relationships with people along our routes. We learned which motorcycles worked at altitude, which luggage survived rental use, what riders packed that they never needed, where weather caused trouble, and which roads could turn ugly after a night of rain.

Then we wrote about it.

We put the information on the website so the next rider could arrive better prepared than the last one.

That is what Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental represents to us. Not a logo. Not a color scheme. Not a search term.

Years of accumulated experience and a lot of people doing the work.

Why Brand Identity Matters

Think about the motorcycle brands you already know.

If another luggage manufacturer appeared tomorrow with a nearly identical name to Mosko Moto or Touratech, adopted familiar visual cues, and started advertising around the established company’s name, the problem would become obvious the moment customers began ordering from one while believing they were buying from the other.

The existence of another luggage company would not be the issue. Customer confusion would.

The same principle applies here.

When a rider books Ecuador Freedom, we want that rider to know exactly which company is providing the motorcycle, planning the route, choosing the hotels, monitoring the ride, maintaining the bike, answering the phone, and standing behind the trip.

There should be zero mystery about that.

Make Sure You Know Who You Are Booking With

If you are planning a motorcycle trip in Ecuador, compare operators. We think you should.

Look at the motorcycles. Look at the routes. Look at the hotels. Read the reviews. Look at how long the company has been operating, what kind of support it provides, how it handles emergencies, and how much information it is willing to give you before asking for your money.

If Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental is the company you want to ride with, make sure that is the company you are actually booking with.

If you see an advertisement, quotation, email, website, or tour offer and are not sure whether it came from us, contact our Quito office directly. We will tell you.

If you compare everything and decide another company is a better fit, go ride with them and have a great trip. Ecuador has enough extraordinary roads for everybody.

Just make the decision yourself.

We started Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental in 2009 and built it one motorcycle, one route, one customer, and one hard-earned lesson at a time.

We have no interest in getting your business because you were confused.

We want your business because you know exactly who we are.
