This self-guided motorcycle adventure tour is designed to take you on Ecuador's best paved backroads and to enjoy the most unique and comfortable lodging available in the country. The ride explores the three distinct worlds' of continental Ecuador - the Andes - the Amazon and the Pacific Coast. It is a tour that is excellent for 2-up riding, groups of friends looking for an incredible journey, or even first time adventure riders who are looking for a way around all possible obstacles while having all the planning taken care of.

You’ll have a map and GPS with pre-programmed routes for each day, a hotel to aim for each night, and all the time in the world to get there.

Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental provides a "Road Book" with thorough, day-to-day information including descriptions of local highlights, history, and "hidden gems" that aren’t common knowledge. You can use this information to tailor your days' rides, including as much or as little as you like. You'll have the support of the country's most experienced and largest motorcycle and 4x4 tour operator at all times through the provided local prepaid cell phone.

The tour has opportunities for several off-bike activities as well, including the hot springs at Papallacta, a motorized canoe expedition in the Amazon jungle with a native guide, zip lines across the Pastaza River Gorge, surfing in the Pacific, and a traditional cleansing ceremony by the Tsachilla Tribe of the Ecuadorian Rainforest.  You can ride it with any of our motorcycles or 4x4s.  We hope to see you on the Backroads of Ecuador soon!

quito Ecuador at nightOur office, conveniently located in one of the prime areas in Quito, is the perfect starting point for a self-guided motorcycle tour. Located only a few minutes from the main tunnel leading out of the city; you can leave without having to deal with heavy traffic. Alongside many cafeś, restaurants, beautiful hotels, museums, and theaters; our location has just about anything waiting for you around every corner - all within walking distance!  So, arrive a day or two early to take full advantage of what this city offers. In 1978, Quito became the first place on the planet to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for having the best-preserved historic center in all of Latin America.
intinan museum 001During the first morning of the tour, you’ll be outfitted with the motorcycle of your choice and given a thorough orientation answering all questions concerning local customs, rules of the road, riding signals, Ecuadorian driver courtesies, and more.  We'll review the route with you in detail, providing you with your pre-programmed GPS navigation unit along with a "Road Book" containing daily maps, including descriptions of local highlights, history, gas stations, suggested lunch stops, and other "hidden gems" that aren’t common knowledge. You can use this information to tailor your days, including as much or as little as you like.  We'll show you how to call us using the pre-paid cell phone and what to do if you have any problems along the way. motorcyclists on the western slopes of the andes in ecuador

Your first stop won't even be in the same hemisphere! After all, anyone who visits Ecuador needs to stand in both hemispheres at the same time for a photo op, don't they? You'll learn about how ancient peoples came to understand that this was the center of the world long before there were devices like GPS that made it clear. Standing directly on the Equator red line, you'll explore how the Coriolis effect affects your balance and weight, and you will see how water drains either clockwise or counter-clockwise, depending on what side of the equator you're standing on. You'll also have a chance to visit model Ecuadorian homes from different regions of the country so that you can better grasp what cultures and customs mean when you pass through other areas during your travels.

adventure motorcyclist checking out the andes in ecuadorRiding outside of Quito, you have officially reached the northern hemisphere. As your first stop out here, you will visit a fantastic geological reserve known as Pululahua Crater. Here a volcano erupted 2500 years ago and created this incredible geologic anomaly. This is the only place in the world where humans live inside a volcanic crater! After that - head over to the mountain ranges on the Western Side of Ecuador's Andes mountain range; home to dense forests and gorgeous views.

You can have lunch in the garden of a fantastic restaurant in the heart of the cloud forest. You'll watch in amazement as hundreds of colorful birds surround us as you enjoy the local cuisine.waterfall and motorcyclist

kashamaFrom here, you'll continue descending the western slopes of the Andes, passing several dairy and fruit farms and small welcoming villages.  The air will be a bit thicker and warmer as you descend to the lowlands. A waterfall serves as a famous swimming hole for the locals, and the GPS will direct you to it so you can enjoy a refreshing swim to keep you cool.
Check into a unique rainforest hotel and spa - built right into a waterfall. The Kashama Lodge was designed based on the layout of the cliffside town of Manarola, Italy.  It resembles an artist’s palette; vibrant buildings jostle each other for space.  The first thing you'll probably want to do is jump in for a swim in its inviting, private waterfall and the spring-fed pool.  You'll be dining here with its delicious regional recipes from the rainforest (included).

Highlights

What to Expect

This self-guided motorcycle (or 4x4) adventure tour will start and end in our offices located in the fashionable "La Carolina" neighborhood of Quito - close to several hotels, parks, shopping malls, restaurants, and museums.

To prepare you for this adventure, our staff will provide you with a detailed and thoughtful presentation on Ecuadorian rules of the road, customs and courtesies. You'll be instructed on how to operate your pre-programmed GPS unit, and you will be given a packet that includes your prepaid hotel vouchers and daily map sheets with points of interest, descriptions of local highlights information, and "hidden gems" that aren't common knowledge.  You can use this information to tailor your day - including as much or as little of it as you like. The route will also be reviewed with you in detail to provide you with additional helpful information about the timing, suggestions for lunch stops, and where to get gas along the way.

You will be provided the adventure motorcycle or 4x4 vehicle of your choice, fitted with a waterproof luggage system, a first aid kit, a tank bag if you want one, spare innertubes (or tire repair kit), and a set of tools. In addition, you will have a prepaid cell phone to call us for support at any time during your trip.  We will carefully review the bike (or 4x4) with you using our multi-point checklist to be sure that everything is in perfect working order before your departure and that you know what to do in case of an emergency or breakdown.

The route you will follow over the next ten days is based on several years of experience and riding these routes many times on our guided version of the tour.  The itinerary is made of mostly paved roads with very little traffic.  There are several stops available which are marked on the GPS unit and the daily route sheets. It is entirely up to you to decide if you want to check them out.

You will have many opportunities for amazing photos and stops in remote villages where visitors are infrequent. Locals are friendly and the areas visited are very safe with low crime rates.

During your ride, Ecuador Freedom staff will monitor your daily progress using an onboard GPS satellite tracking system and can assist you by telephone if you need to change your route, need roadside assistance, or need help in any way.

Upon returning, you will have access to our honor bar, hot tub, hot shower, and staff that can assist you with your next destination.

Weather and Temperatures

Weather and temperature ranges in Ecuador are generally the same year-round. In the highlands, you can expect the chance of passing showers but rarely a full day of rain. Prospects for a full day of rain are more likely on the western slopes of the Andes in March, April, and early May. This ride will be at elevations of sea level (where temperatures can be around 90 degrees Fahrenheit) to 14,500 (where temperatures can be in the 30's Fahrenheit). Dressing in layers is recommended.  Please see this article for more information about the weather in Ecuador.

Accommodations
Throughout the tour, you will stay in higher-end, carefully selected,  non-touristy, biker-friendly, inns, hotels, and lodges. See this page for details, photos, and links to the accommodations provided.  Ecuador Freedom has the right to substitute accommodations of equal quality due to availability and will notify you of these changes.

Packing List and Preparation
Ecuador Freedom will provide you with detailed information to prepare for the ride, including a packing list.  You should know how to make general motorcycle repairs and maintenance and to be able to change an innertube (click for a video tutorial).  Before you travel, we recommend that you familiarize yourself in advance with these recommended guidebooks and maps.
