15 Years in the Making: Ecuador Freedom’s Introduction to Ecuador Tour, Now Better Than Ever

When Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental first launched the Introduction to Ecuador Tour in 2010, our goal was clear: create one ride that distilled the very essence of Ecuador into a single, unforgettable journey. Over twelve days, riders would traverse the Andes, coast, and Amazon Basin — three worlds in one country — and come away with a deep sense of place.

Fifteen years and countless miles later, the tour has been reborn. After more than a decade and a half of refining routes, forging local connections, and listening to riders, the Introduction to Ecuador Tour has been redesigned to include even more of the country’s hidden gems, authentic cultural encounters, and breathtaking stays. It’s still the same flagship adventure — but now it carries the weight of fifteen years of hard-earned knowledge, distilled into twelve extraordinary days.

Fifteen Years of Riding, Packed into Twelve Days

What makes the updated tour special isn’t just the miles — though there are plenty of those. It’s the way the journey weaves together Ecuador’s history, culture, and landscapes, with each day offering something distinct. This is the product of thousands of hours on the road, exploring, testing, and revisiting until we found the perfect balance of adventure and immersion.

Riders will still cross high Andean passes, descend into the steamy Amazon, and cruise along the Pacific coast, but now the itinerary includes stops and experiences you won’t find on any other tour. Among the highlights: Cajas National Park, one of the world’s most epic motorcycle roads, where alpine lakes, páramo grasslands, and winding curves create a riding experience that’s simply unforgettable.

Experiences

Thanks to our local knowledge and long-standing relationships, the tour now includes visits that showcase Ecuador’s diversity in ways few outsiders ever see:

  • Exotic Fruit Farm Tasting and Tour in the Chocó-Andino cloudforest — Run by Jim and Mimi, pioneers who’ve lived here for more than forty years, this extraordinary homestead doubles as a research garden with 630+ species of fruits, herbs, and spices. You’ll wander their rustic property, sample unusual fruits straight from the trees, and “test your senses” by identifying spices and herbs by scent alone. It’s an unforgettable visit that reveals the ingenuity and resilience it takes to thrive in Ecuador’s remote forests.

  • Leather tannery in Cotacachi — This is no sanitized workshop but a glimpse into centuries-old tradition. Salted hides are stacked high, workers scrape away fat and fur with hand tools, and the air is heavy with the unmistakable scent of tanning leather. Without modern machinery, the process feels medieval — raw, real, and unforgettable. Watching the craft unfold is like stepping back in time to see how leather was made for generations.

  • Tahuantsuyo weaving workshop in Otavalo — Here, artisans work at backstrap looms, their hands moving with a rhythm passed down for centuries. Visitors see vibrant patterns take shape thread by thread, woven with natural dyes and immense patience. This is not a show for tourists but a daily practice of families who keep ancient traditions alive, producing textiles prized throughout the Andes.

  • Coffee growers’ association in Apuela — In this fertile valley, farmers welcome riders into their cooperative, where the smell of freshly roasted beans fills the air. You’ll see how coffee is cultivated on steep slopes, then follow the process from hand-picking to roasting. The tasting that follows is unforgettable — rich, aromatic, and deeply tied to the land and the people who grow it.

  • Guitar Makers in San Bartolomé — This mountain town resonates with music long before you hear the first note. In small workshops, luthiers shape guitars from rare Andean woods, each instrument crafted with devotion and skill honed over generations. Their creations have traveled the world, sought out by musicians from Joni Mitchell to Bob Dylan, yet the heart of the craft remains here on the famous "guitar road."

  • Paccari Chocolate Experience — Ecuador is the birthplace of fine-flavor cacao, and here you see how it becomes world-class chocolate. From cracking open the pods to fermenting, roasting, and tasting, the process is laid bare by the very farmers and chocolatiers who make it possible. Paccari has won over 400 international awards, but tasting it at the source adds a richness you’ll never find on a store shelf.

  • Hola Vida waterfall hike — A 15-minute walk plunges you into the deep Amazon: the air turns earthy and sweet, insects and birds create a constant chorus, and the path crosses small suspension bridges under towering canopy. The trail ends at a 100-foot cascade that crashes into a clear jungle pool at just the right temperature. It’s irresistible—dive in, cool off, and reset for a fantastic ride through the afternoon.

  • Cajas National Park — Riding here feels like entering another planet. The road climbs above 13,000 feet into a landscape dotted with hundreds of alpine lakes, twisted Polylepis forests, and vast páramo grasslands. Cold mist clings to the curves as vicuñas graze in the distance, making this one of the most dramatic and unforgettable motorcycle routes in the world.

The Ecuador Freedom Touch

This isn’t just a loop around Ecuador. The Introduction to Ecuador Tour is fifteen years of exploration compressed into twelve days, designed to share the country in its most vivid, authentic form. Every stop, every meal, and every overnight stay has been chosen with purpose: to show you Ecuador as we’ve come to know and love it.

You’ll ride along the Equator where it cuts across glaciers, watch vicuñas graze beneath Chimborazo, taste chocolate where it’s grown, and soak in hot springs at the foot of an active volcano. You’ll meet artisans, farmers, and families who open their homes and workshops to share their stories. And at the end of each day, you’ll settle into accommodations that reflect the character of the region — from colonial haciendas to Amazon lodges.
