Ecuador has emerged as one of the most exciting and intriguing destinations for luxury motorcycle tourists. Luxury travelers can now experience its twisty roads, high Andes mountains, Pacific Coast, and Amazon jungle on two wheels.

We designed this 11-day, 1300-mile lap of the country for adventurous spirits, curious minds, and worldly travelers who enjoy the most exceptional hospitality standards while enjoying world-class motorcycling on some of the best roads in the Western Hemisphere. Riders are provided a map and GPS navigation system with pre-programmed routes for each day, a luxury, 5-star hotel to aim for each night, and plenty of time to experience different cultural and gastronomical stops along the way. Ecuador Freedom provides a fully-equipped adventure motorcycle or 4x4, plus a "Road Book" with thorough, day-to-day information including descriptions of local highlights, history, and "hidden gems" that aren’t common knowledge. Participants will use this information to tailor their days' rides, including as much or as little as they like, all the while having the support of the country's most experienced and largest motorcycle and 4x4 tour operator through the provided local prepaid cell phone.

The tour has opportunities for several off-bike activities, including the hot springs at Papallacta, visiting the Panama Hat Makers, strolling the cobbled streets of Cuenca, and surfing in the Pacific, and a traditional cleansing ceremony by the Tsachilla Tribe of the Ecuadorian Rainforest.  You can ride it with any of our motorcycles or 4x4's.  Have a look and let us know if you have any questions. We hope to see you riding the Lap of Luxury in Ecuador!

Itinerary

Day 1 - Valle Hermoso

Elevation Profile - Day 1

You'll begin and end your 11-day "Lap of Luxury" self-guided tour from our shop in the upscale neighborhood of La Carolina in Quito, Ecuador. In 1978, Quito became the first place on the planet to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for having the best-preserved historic center in all of Latin America. Quito is high on the Altiplano Plateau (the highest capital city in the world) in the Andes at 9,350 feet.  We suggest that you arrive a day or two early to experience our magnificent capital city while getting acclimated to the high altitude before beginning the tour.  Our shop is located in the most luxurious and modern part of the city, so we suggest you get a hotel near our shop and take advantage of all that this city has to offer.

During the first morning of the tour, you’ll be outfitted with the motorcycle of your choice and given a thorough orientation answering all questions concerning local customs, rules of the road, riding signals, Ecuadorian driver courtesies, and more.  road out of Quito to west for motorcycle adventureWe'll review the route with you in detail.  We will show you how to operate your pre-programmed GPS navigation unit.  You will also get our exclusive "Road Book," containing daily maps, including descriptions of local highlights, history, gas stations, suggested lunch stops, and other "hidden gems" that aren’t common knowledge. You can use this information to tailor your days, including as much or as little as you like.  We'll show you how to call us using the pre-paid cell phone and what to do if you have any problems along the way.  You'll head out on the bike, taking the tunnel, which is just a few blocks from our office, that takes you to the highway out of the city with very little traffic.

Inti-ñan means “path of the Sun” in the Quechua language, and the Inti-ñan Museum is situated directly on the Equator. The indigenous peoples have revered this site for thousands of years, and you will learn how ancient people came to understand that this was the center of the world centuries before the advent of modern geography or GPS devices. During your first stop directly on the Equator “red line,” you will experiment with gravity, including witnessing how water drains either clockwise or counter-clockwise, depending on which side of the Equator you are standing. You will also have the opportunity to see how the indigenous populations of Ecuador live by visiting models of their homes. This tour will enable you to understand better the cultures and ways of life that you will experience as we pass through the various regions.

kashama lodge watefrall and motorcycle adventureDeparting the Inti-ñan Museum, you are now officially outside of the Quito metropolitan region and have begun riding in the Northern Hemisphere. The second suggested stop is to view the beautiful Pululahua Crater Geo-Botanical Reserve, a crater formed by a volcanic eruption 2,500 years ago. From there, head onto the Andes' western slopes that are full of dense, green forests and steep mountains. The roads have been recently paved, and riding these sharp curves is sure to be exhilarating fun.

You can have lunch in the garden of a fantastic restaurant in the heart of the cloudforest.   You'll watch in amazement as hundreds of colorful birds surround us as you enjoy the local cuisine.

From here, you'll continue descending the western slopes of the Andes, passing several dairy and fruit farms and small welcoming villages.  The air will be a bit thicker and warmer as you descend to the lowlands.  cloudforest western slopes ecuadsor motorcyle adventure tour

Check into a unique hotel and spa - built right into a waterfall.  The owner of the Kashama Lodge based designed this magnificent place after his travels to Italy.  The cliffside town of Manarola, Italy was his inspiration.  It resembles an artist’s palette; vibrant buildings jostle each other for space.  The first thing you'll probably want to do (after checking in to your luxurious suite) is jump in for a swim in its inviting, private waterfall.  You'll be dining here with its first-class service. Dinner is included. A shamanic cleansing performed by the local rainforest Tsachilla tribe and other spa treatments are available with advanced reservations.  Contact us for details.

Highlights

What to Expect

This luxury self-guided motorcycle (or 4x4) adventure tour will start and end in our offices in Quito's upscale "La Carolina" neighborhood - close to several hotels, parks, shopping malls, galleries, restaurants, and museums.

Prior to your departure (on the day prior or the morning of departure), we will give you a detailed and thoughtful presentation on Ecuadorian rules of the road, customs, and courtesies. We will instruct you on how to operate your pre-programmed GPS unit and given a packet that includes your prepaid hotel vouchers and daily map sheets with points of interest, descriptions of local highlights information, and "hidden gems" that aren't common knowledge.  You can use this information to tailor your day - including as much or as little as you like. The route will be reviewed with you in detail to provide you with additional useful information about the timing, suggestions for lunch stops, and where to get gas along the way.

On the morning of your departure, we will provide you with the adventure motorcycle (or 4x4 vehicle) of your choice, fitted with a waterproof luggage system, a first aid kit, a tankbag if you want one, spare innertubes (or tire repair kit) and a set of tools. You will also have a prepaid cell phone to call us for support anytime during your trip.  We will carefully review the bike (or 4x4) with you using our multi-point checklist to ensure that everything is in perfect working order before your departure and that you know what to do in case of an emergency or breakdown.

The route you will follow over the next ten days is based on several years of developing, exploring, testing, and riding these routes many times.  The route consists of paved roads with very little traffic.  Several stops are available, marked on the GPS unit and the daily route sheets. It is up to you to decide if you want to check them out.

The hotel accommodations are upscale and of top quality, 4-5 star haciendas, hotels, and lodges with a unique character. You will have dinner and breakfast included at each overnight stop and will be provided upgraded or suite accommodations each night.

You will have many opportunities for amazing photos and stops in remote villages where visitors are infrequent. Locals are friendly, and the areas visited are very safe with very low crime rates.

Ecuador Freedom staff will monitor your journey during your ride using an onboard GPS satellite tracking system.  We can assist you by telephone if you need to change your route, need roadside assistance, or help in any way.

Upon returning, you will have access to our honor bar, jacuzzi, hot shower, and staff that can assist you with your next destination.

Weather and Temperatures

Weather and temperature ranges in Ecuador are generally the same year-round. You can expect the chance of passing showers in the highlands but rarely a full day of rain.  Chances for a full day of rain are more likely on the western slopes of the Andes in March, April, and early May. This ride will be in elevations of sea level (where temperatures can be around 90 degrees Fahrenheit) to 14,500 (where temperatures can be in the 30's Fahrenheit). Dressing in layers is recommended.  Please see this article for more information about the weather in Ecuador.

Accommodations
Throughout the tour, you will stay in higher-end, carefully selected, non-touristy, four- and 5-star haciendas, hotels, and nature lodges. See this page for details, photos, and links to the accommodations provided.

Packing List and Preparation
Ecuador Freedom will provide detailed information to prepare for the ride, including a packing list. Please also read our article entitled Preparing for a Self-Guided Tour: The Essentials.  You should know how to make general motorcycle repairs and maintenance and to be able to change an innertube (click for a video tutorial).  Before you travel, we recommend you familiarize yourself with these recommended guidebooks and maps.

Available Support Truck and Guide Service

Ecuador Freedom can provide you or your group a support vehicle and or guide for an additional charge.  Please see the pricing on this page.

Medical and security emergencies happen; when they do, we rely on Global Rescue, the world’s leading membership organization providing integrated medical, security, travel risk, and crisis response services to travelers worldwide. Memberships start at $129

Global Rescue has created the industry’s most complete travel insurance that was built with the outdoorsman in mind. With minimal exclusions, the IMG Signature Travel Insurance is the perfect add-on to your Global Rescue membership.
