Ecuador is one of the most geographically, culturally, and biologically diverse countries in the world. From the towering peaks of the Andes to lush cloud forests, tropical lowlands, and the Amazon Basin, this South American country is a motorcycling paradise with landscapes that change dramatically in a single day’s ride.

This self-guided motorcycle adventure introduces you to the very best of continental Ecuador. Carefully designed from years of local riding experience, the route showcases the Andes, the Pacific Coast, and the Amazon, giving you a true taste of Ecuador’s stunning diversity.

Along the way, you’ll explore vibrant colonial cities like Quito and Cuenca, ride through artisan towns such as Cotacachi and Saraguro, and relax in well-loved hangouts like Canoa, Vilcabamba, and Baños. You’ll stay in handpicked accommodations ranging from historic haciendas once visited by revolutionaries, to welcoming boutique hotels, and rainforest lodges that bring you close to nature. Stops include extraordinary cultural encounters such as visiting leather artisans, guitar makers, coffee growers, and weavers who carry on centuries-old traditions.

Culinary highlights are an essential part of the journey. Taste fresh-roasted coffee in the Intag Valley, pure cacao at the Paccari Chocolate Experience, river fish steamed in jungle leaves, and coastal specialties like just-caught shrimp. In the highlands, you’ll savor hearty soups, hand-made bizcochos with cheese, and fresh bread from wood-fired ovens in colonial plazas.

What makes motorcycling in Ecuador so remarkable is how it awakens all your senses. You’ll smell eucalyptus and pine forests in the mountains, ripening bananas and cacao pods on the coastal plains, and salt air drifting in from the Pacific. You’ll see wild orchids clinging to cloud forest trees, herds of llamas and vicuñas on the high-altitude páramo, and endless waterfalls on the road into the Amazon. From the crisp air above 14,000 feet to the humid warmth of the rainforest, every curve in the road reveals a new world to discover.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Otavalo

Day 1
Quito – El Quinche – Cayambe – Zuleta – Otavalo – Cotacachi

141 km | 88 miles

Quito Ecuador at night Quito is a city that wakes up early, its colonial plazas buzzing under the shadow of volcanoes. At 2,850 meters (9,350 feet), the air is thin and the streets alive with color, noise, and rhythm. After a thorough pre-ride briefing covering local road customs and GPS use, you’ll feel set to ride with confidence. Less than a mile of city riding takes you through a tunnel that spits you straight onto the Pan-American Highway, and in an instant, the city chaos is behind you. The Andes open ahead — crisp air, twisting asphalt, and the first taste of Ecuador’s mountains.

El Quinche Basilica The first stop is the Basilica of El Quinche, a pilgrimage site that pulses with faith and stories. For centuries, people have walked here from Quito and beyond, some barefoot, some carrying their burdens on their backs, to ask for miracles. The walls are lined with plaques thanking the Virgin for answered prayers. Each November, tens of thousands still arrive on foot, filling the town with candlelight and chants. Local drivers bring their cars and trucks here to be blessed before long journeys — and riders can do the same with their motorcycles, asking for safe passage on the road ahead.

Standing at the Equator near Cayambe North of here lies Hacienda Guachala, the oldest hacienda in Ecuador. Built in 1580, it has seen explorers, revolutionaries, and presidents pass through its heavy stone doors. Sitting down to lunch in its sunlit courtyard, you feel the centuries layered into the walls — the grit of history mixed with the comfort of a working estate.

The road then winds to the Quitsato Sundial, a giant stone circle set directly on the Equator. Long before satellites and smartphones, ancient Andean cultures marked time here with the sun and stars. Stand astride the line, one boot in the north and the other in the south, as Cayambe Volcano looms in the distance — snow and ice gleaming at the only place on Earth where the Equator cuts across glaciers.

Weaving workshop in Cayambe In Cayambe, it’s worth pulling over for the town’s famed bizcochos — buttery biscuits paired with fresh cheese and coffee. Beyond the cafés, quiet backroads wind into adobe villages and valleys scented with eucalyptus. The Zuleta Valley unfolds with embroidery workshops and saddle-makers’ benches, where hands work leather and thread the same way they did generations ago.otavalo embroidery at the market

Higher still, the road crests above 10,000 feet. Lake San Pablo shimmers far below, tucked against the flanks of Imbabura Volcano. In Otavalo, you can step inside a family workshop where backstrap looms clatter, weaving bright patterns that carry centuries of meaning.

Motorcycles parked at Hacienda Pinsaquí The day closes at Hacienda Pinsaquí, a colonial estate built in 1790. Simón Bolívar stayed here, and its gardens, courtyards, and antique-filled rooms still carry that weight of history. It’s warm, welcoming, and steeped in stories — not just a place to sleep, but a place where the journey feels anchored in something bigger.

Did you know? Cayambe Volcano is the only spot on Earth where the Equator runs across permanent snow and ice — a one-of-a-kind phenomenon that makes this stop both geographical and mythical.

What to Expect

This 12-day self-guided motorcycle adventure begins at our office in Quito’s Carolina neighborhood. Before you set off, we’ll provide a thorough orientation covering Ecuadorian road rules, riding customs, and local courtesies. You’ll also receive a pre-programmed GPS navigation unit and a packet with hotel vouchers, daily route maps, suggested lunch stops, fuel locations, and detailed notes on points of interest. With these tools, you’ll be fully prepared to ride at your own pace and enjoy the journey with confidence.

On the morning of departure, your motorcycle (or 4x4) will be ready and equipped with a waterproof luggage system, first aid kit, spare inner tubes (or tire repair kit), a tool kit, and a tank bag if requested. You’ll also receive a prepaid cell phone for 24-hour support. Each vehicle is carefully inspected before your departure to ensure everything is in perfect working order. We’ll also review what to do in case of an emergency or breakdown so you feel secure throughout the trip.

The route has been carefully designed and refined through years of experience. It avoids busy highways in favor of scenic, low-traffic backroads. Each day’s GPS track and map notes include highlights, safe fuel stops, and cultural points of interest. For riders who want more variety, optional unpaved detours can be provided upon request.

You’ll pass through villages where tourism is rare, giving you authentic opportunities to connect with locals and capture unique photos along the way. Your motorcycle’s GPS tracker allows us to monitor your progress each day, and our team is always available by phone for assistance, whether it’s navigation advice or roadside support.

When you return at the end of the tour, you’ll have access to our after-ride lounge with a hot shower, jacuzzi, and honor bar. Our staff will also be available to assist with luggage, transfers, or onward travel arrangements.

Weather and Temperatures

Ecuador’s climate is determined by altitude more than season, so conditions can vary widely in a single day’s ride. In the highlands, short showers are possible but full days of rain are uncommon. The western slopes of the Andes see more rainfall between March and May. During this tour, you’ll ride from sea level on the coast (around 90°F / 32°C) up to 14,500 feet in the Chimborazo Wildlife Refuge (as low as the 30s°F / 0–5°C). Dressing in layers is the best way to stay comfortable. For more details, see this article.

Accommodations

Each night you’ll stay in carefully selected hotels, lodges, and haciendas chosen for comfort, authenticity, and location. These biker-friendly stays add to the overall experience of the tour. If substitutions are required due to availability, they will always be of equal quality.

Packing List and Preparation

We’ll provide a detailed packing list and preparation guide before your trip. Riders should be comfortable with basic motorcycle maintenance and able to carry out simple repairs, such as changing an inner tube. To enhance your ride, we also recommend reviewing these guidebooks and maps.

The system will take you through a few easy steps to book your tour and any desired extensions.  The system is secure and uses a third-party, Ecuadorian payment system called Kushki, which meets all international regulations and security standards. Payment may be made using any major credit card.  Please note that we must collect a government-issued ID number from you when booking due to Ecuadorian banking regulations.  You may use your passport, driver's license, or any other government identification number.

Alternatively, you may request payment through PayPal in the system (click the PayPal logo on checkout). If you prefer to send a wire transfer, please let us know (using the "Ask a Question" button or "Contact" menu item, and we will provide our banking details.

Deposits are refundable minus 10% of the total rental or tour price only if canceled at least 90 days prior to departure or pick-up date. Cancellations are very costly to us as they impede our planning and ability to sell rentals and tours to other customers. Therefore, cancellations for any reason made less than 90 days before the pickup or departure date are not refundable nor may they be applied to a future rental or tour.

To protect yourself from this loss of your deposit, it is up to you to secure travel insurance that covers cancellations due to health problems, civil unrest, acts of God, family tragedies, any issues, cancellations or delays with flight departures, etc.

Medical and security emergencies happen; when they do, we rely on Global Rescue, the world’s leading membership organization providing integrated medical, security, travel risk, and crisis response services to travelers worldwide. Memberships start at $129

Global Rescue has created the industry’s most complete travel insurance that was built with the outdoorsman in mind. With minimal exclusions, the IMG Signature Travel Insurance is the perfect add-on to your Global Rescue membership.
