The Guided Backroads of Ecuador Motorcycle Tour is designed for riders who want more than just great roads—they want access, insight, and the confidence that comes from traveling with people who truly know the country. Over ten days, this guided experience takes you deep into Ecuador’s most rewarding regions, linking the Andes, the Amazon Basin, and the Pacific Coast through lightly traveled paved backroads chosen for scenery, flow, and cultural connection.
What defines this tour is the role of the guides. These are experienced riders with intimate knowledge of Ecuador’s roads, regions, and rhythms. They manage the logistics, read local conditions, and set a steady, comfortable pace, allowing you to focus entirely on the ride. Along the way, they add context—introducing you to local communities, explaining regional history, and pointing out places that rarely appear on maps. You’re not just following a route; you’re gaining insight that transforms the ride into a deeper experience.
The itinerary balances purposeful riding with carefully chosen off-bike experiences, from relaxing in volcanic hot springs to exploring the Amazon by motorized canoe and spending time along Ecuador’s Pacific coast. Accommodations and meals are selected to complement the journey, providing comfort and character at the end of each riding day.
This is a fully guided, all-inclusive tour designed to remove uncertainty while maximizing experience. For riders who value expert leadership, meaningful access, and well-chosen roads over speed or spectacle, the Backroads of Ecuador tour delivers the country as it’s meant to be experienced—one informed mile at a time.

Itinerary
Elevation Profile - Day 1
Quito - Inti-ñan - Valle Hermoso
You'll begin this 10-day "Backroads of Ecuador" guided motorcycle tour from our shop in Quito, Ecuador. In 1978, Quito became the first place on the planet to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for having the best-preserved historic center in all of Latin America. Quito is high on the Altiplano Plateau (the highest capital city in the world) in the Andes at 9,350 feet. We suggest that you arrive a day or two early to experience our magnificent capital city while getting acclimated to the high altitude before beginning the tour. Our shop is located in the most luxurious and modern part of the city, so we suggest you get a hotel near our shop and take advantage of all that this city has to offer.
During the first morning of the tour, you’ll be outfitted with the motorcycle of your choice and given a thorough orientation answering all questions concerning local customs, rules of the road, riding signals, Ecuadorian driver courtesies, and more.
Inti-ñan means “path of the Sun” in the Quechua language, and the Inti-ñan Museum is situated directly on the Equator. The indigenous peoples have revered this site for thousands of years. Our group will learn how ancient people came to understand that this was the center of the world centuries before the advent of modern geography or GPS devices. During our first stop directly on the “red line,” you will experiment with gravity, including witnessing how water drains either clockwise or counter-clockwise, depending on which side of the Equator you are standing. You will also have the opportunity to see how the indigenous populations of Ecuador live by visiting models of their homes. These models will enable you to understand better the cultures and ways of life that you will experience as we pass through the various regions.
Departing the Inti-ñan Museum, we are now officially outside of the Quito metropolitan region and have begun riding in the Northern Hemisphere. Our second stop is to view the beautiful Pululahua Crater Geo-Botanical Reserve, a crater formed by a volcanic eruption 2,500 years ago. From there, head onto the Andes' western slopes that are full of dense, green forests and steep mountains. The roads have been paved recently, and riding these sharp curves is sure to be exhilarating fun.
We will have lunch in the garden of a fantastic restaurant in the heart of the cloud forest. We'll watch in amazement as hundreds of colorful birds surround us as we enjoy the local cuisine.
From here, we'll continue descending the western slopes of the Andes, passing several dairy and fruit farms and small welcoming villages. The air will be a bit thicker and warmer as we descend to the lowlands.
We'll check into a unique hotel and spa - built right into a waterfall. The Kashama Lodge was designed based on the layout of the cliffside town of Manarola, Italy. It resembles an artist’s palette; vibrant buildings jostle each other for space. The first thing you'll probably want to do is jump in for a swim in its beautiful, private waterfall. We'll be dining right next to it with the first-class service.

What to Expect
This guided motorcycle adventure begins at our offices in Quito’s Carolina neighborhood—one of the city’s safest, most convenient, and well-connected areas. We strongly recommend arriving in Quito one or two days early to enjoy the city, adjust to the altitude, and complete paperwork in advance so Day One starts smoothly and without pressure.
Orientation, Motorcycles & Support
On the morning of departure, you’ll take part in a comprehensive pre-ride briefing. This detailed session covers Ecuadorian rules of the road, local driving customs, cultural courtesies, and clear group riding protocols. It’s designed to set expectations, build confidence, and ensure everyone rides predictably and comfortably from the first mile.
You’ll be provided with the adventure motorcycle of your choice, equipped with a waterproof luggage system and an optional tank bag. For groups of more than five riders, a support truck accompanies the tour to carry luggage and bottled water, provide logistical assistance, and respond quickly in the unlikely event of an emergency. For smaller groups, riders carry their gear in the supplied saddlebags or luggage system.
The Route & Riding Experience
This route is the result of years of refinement and repeated riding. Your guide knows these roads intimately, having ridden them many times in varying conditions. The journey is almost entirely paved, with only occasional unpaved driveways or short construction sections. Roads are selected for minimal traffic, strong flow, and outstanding scenery rather than technical challenge.
The riding pace is intentionally relaxed. This is not a tour designed to push limits. Instead, the focus is on awareness, enjoyment, and the ability to lift your head, look around, and fully experience the landscapes you’re riding through. Throughout the day, your guide will make frequent stops—to introduce you to locals, share regional history, and point out lesser-known places that most travelers never see.
After the Ride
Upon returning, you’ll have access to our honor bar, jacuzzi, hot showers, and a comfortable space to unwind. Our staff is also available to assist with onward travel plans or your next destination.
Weather & Temperatures
Weather and temperature ranges in Ecuador are generally consistent year-round. You can expect occasional passing showers in the highlands, but full days of rain are uncommon. The likelihood of a full day of rain increases on the western slopes of the Andes during March, April, and early May.
This ride spans elevations from sea level—where temperatures can reach around 90°F (32°C)—to approximately 14,500 feet, where temperatures can drop into the 30s°F (0–4°C). Dressing in layers is strongly recommended. Please refer to our detailed weather article for additional information.
Accommodations
Throughout the tour, we stay in carefully selected, high-end hotels, lodges, and inns chosen for comfort, character, and location. Details, photos, and accommodation links are provided on this page. Ecuador Freedom reserves the right to substitute accommodations of equal quality due to availability and will notify you if changes are required.
Packing List & Preparation
Ecuador Freedom provides detailed pre-trip information, including a recommended packing list and preparation guidelines. No knowledge of Spanish is required—your guide is fluent in both English and Spanish. Before traveling, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the suggested guidebooks and maps to enhance your overall experience.

We'll be heading further down the coast today and

We'll head back towards the Andes this morning, passing through pineapple and banana farms.
We'll check into one of the city's most luxurious hotels - the

After a hearty buffet breakfast, we'll pack up our bikes and ride through Cuenca on its cobblestone streets and depart the city, heading east. The road will first bring us past fantastic rock outcroppings and then drop down into a warmer, greener valley. The valley is replete with fruit orchards, flower plantations, and orchid nurseries. This is a newly paved road, and this beautiful valley is becoming a favorite place for Cuencanos to buy their weekend homes. We will take the famous "Route of the Guitars"- the road along which several famous guitar makers have their shops. Musicians from
The Spanish, in their quest for gold, tried to colonize them. When they tried to impose taxation and laws, they became deeply angered and attacked a Spanish outpost, killing thousands of settlers. The Spanish Governor was then killed by having molten gold poured down his throat until his bowels burst - their attempt at poetic justice. Most recently, the Shuar continued their culture of being great warriors in the war with Peru in 1995, where they consistently outwitted the Peruvians. They are now a part of Ecuadorian society, and this area of the Amazon, protected by the Shuar, is one of the most pristine parts of the jungle in Ecuador.

Today's ride will take us through a wide variety of terrains and changing climates, so you will need to be prepared with extra layers of clothes and a heavy set of gloves. We'll set out of Macas, heading west to enter the Sangay National Park on the pristine new tarmac. The government had been promising to create this road for the past 111 years- and they finished construction in 2014. There had been a lot of controversy about bringing vehicles into what is considered one of Ecuador's most beautiful natural areas.

It's a series of small, narrow, twisty backroads through beautiful farms and along raging whitewater rivers. We'll cross a narrow gorge of the Pastaza River and enter the small city of Baños, at the base of the active Tungurahua Volcano. Baños was settled in 1553 and enjoys a warm, subtropical climate and is nestled among soaring green hills lined with waterfalls.

Take another steamy volcanic bath and enjoy a full breakfast at the comfortable Posada del Arte hotel before we head back on the road. You are going to miss this place. We will head you eastward - riding down what is known as the "Route of the Waterfalls" through the eastern Andes' slopes, which will eventually descend into the Amazon River Basin.
Again, you will see the vegetation and cultures change dramatically on today's ride. The air will become warm as you arrive in Puyo - and you are now officially in the Amazonia region. We will be riding north, and with a great view of the Sierra to our left as we ride the comfortable, newly paved road with rolling hills and plenty of sweeping curves to keep it fun.

Back on the bike, we head west a few miles and cross a one-lane metal bridge into Puerto Misahualli, the most western navigable port of the Amazon river basin. From here, you could take a boat all the way to the Atlantic ocean via the Amazon river. Puerto Misahualli has a mischievous monkey population that loves to play with the local dogs and tourists. Be sure to bring your camera!

We'll head on another set of narrow serpentine roads to take us into the Jerusalem Dry Forest Reserve. The average rainfall is about 500 mm per year, and temperatures range between 16-19 degrees Celsius. Despite having fewer species than the Rainforest, the Andean Dry Forest is a particularly rare and endangered ecosystem with unique species. This desert-like section of the road will give you one last taste of Ecuador's incredible diversity and beauty.
