Dirt Bike Deluxe Motorcycle Adventure Tour in Ecuador Cloudforest Mindo

Day 1

Quito - Inti'ñan - Nono - Mindo

Distance Covered:  114 km / 71 miles

museo intinan ecuador offroad 4x4 motorcycle adventure tourYou'll begin this 14-day/13-night adventure from our shop in Quito, Ecuador. In 1978, Quito became the first place on the planet to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for having the best-preserved historic center in all of Latin America. Quito is high on the Altiplano Plateau (the second highest in the world) in the Andes at 9,350 feet.  We suggest that you arrive a day or two early to experience our magnificent capital city while getting acclimated to the high altitude before beginning the tour.mindo

During the first morning of the tour, you’ll be outfitted with the motorcycle of your choice and given a thorough orientation answering all questions concerning local customs, rules of the road, riding signals, Ecuadorian driver courtesies, and more. The first day’s ride purposefully includes a sampling of the different types of roads that you will ride.  We will show you how to operate your pre-programmed GPS unit with daily routes and be given a "Road Book" with details and points of interest for each day.  We will provide you with an "emergency kit" containing a pre-paid cell phone, first aid kit, tools, and other items to ensure your ride goes smoothly.  You will have the opportunity to safely become accustomed to asphalt, dry gravel, cobblestone, and dirt farm roads.

pululahua crater motorcycle advrenture tour ecuador 4x4Inti-ñan means “path of the Sun” in the Quechua language, and the Inti-ñan Museum is situated directly on the Equator. The indigenous peoples have revered this site for thousands of years. You will learn how ancient people came to understand that this was the center of the world centuries before the advent of modern geography or GPS devices. On the “red line” marking the equator, you will experiment with gravity, including witnessing how water drains either clockwise or counter-clockwise, depending on which side of the Equator you are standing. You will also have the opportunity to see how the indigenous populations of Ecuador live by visiting models of their homes. These models will enable you to understand better the cultures and ways of life that you will experience in real life as you pass through various regions.

Your second stop is to view the beautiful Pululahua Crater Geo-Botanical Reserve, a crater formed by a volcanic eruption 2,500 years ago. From there, head onto the Andes' western slopes full of dense, green forests and steep mountains.bird on offroad pacific discovery route ecuador motorcycle dirt bike advrenture tour

You'll turn onto a dirt road that will take you to the small town of Nono. It is here where you will begin your ride into the Nono Biological Reserve. This wildlife refuge is famous as one of the world's most biodiverse places.   It contains the small Andean Spectacled Bear and thousands of species of colorful birds and frogs.

Please stop at the Bellavista Bird Lodge and turn the engines off and sit silently for a couple of minutes and see hundreds of colorful birds surround us and put on a show.

You can stop to visit an organic chocolate maker to see how raw cacao is grown and transformed into a premium, gourmet chocolate.   Then you'll ride even deeper into the cloudforest and check into a private cabin at the Terrazas de Dana Boutique Lodge.

Mindo -Las Pampas-Sigchos-Chugchilan
Distance Covered: 134 miles  / 215 km

rding up towards las pampas dirt road motorcycle tour ecuadorOnce you leave Mindo, you will be riding on some of the most scenic paved roads in Ecuador.  Passing through the cloudforest town of San Miguel de Los Bancos, you will take a newly paved road full of incredible switchbacks and hairpin turns. After crossing the roaring Rio Blanco (a popular white-water rafting destination), you'll turn onto a windy unpaved road and through a friendly town.

Then you'll do a series of climbs back into altitude and into the cloudforest again, this time in an even more remote part of it, where ornithologists from around the world visit every year on the lookout for new species. You'll descend again, back into the rainforest, to an altitude of about 2,000 feet. The warm air will tempt you to jump in one of the many crystal waterfall lagoons in this area for a refreshing swim. You'll continue through several coffee, chocolate, and "exotic" fruit farms.  Then you'll begin a climb again that will last the rest of the day.

There are times when this road can get a bit muddy, but the views and scents are out of this world.  You pass through lush jungle, rainforest, and then reach the small village of San Francisco de las Pampas. This town is in a very remote and secluded area of Ecuador, and we are usually warmly greeted by the friendly townsfolk.   We will stop here for lunch before continuing your climb.

pack for a purpose charity motorcycle adventure dirt tourFrom Las Pampas, you will continue your climb, eventually reaching an altitude of about 13,000 feet in a completely different climate than just a few hours before  Its chilly here, and the views are stunning.  Wild alpaca and guinea pigs run freely.   You will cross over a high altitude pass, and you will feel like you are in an airplane in its final descent as you roll down switchbacks with the town of Sigchos below you. Sigchos has been around for many centuries and was an Indigenous settlement and trading post long before it became a Spanish town in the 1530s.motorcycles with nice view riding up from las pampas

From Sigchos, continue on Incan cobblestone that becomes an unimproved dirt road, which is among the most scenic roads in Ecuador.   This road stretch is known as the "Quilotoa Loop" and draws backpackers and adventurers from afar for the idyllic pace of life and scenery.

Day 3
Chugchilan-Quilotoa Crater Lake-Zumbahua-Angamarca-Salinas
Distance Covered: 93 miles  / 149 km

After a hearty breakfaKTM at Quilotoast at Mama Hilda's, you will leave the village and take a dirt road down the side of a cliff and into the deep canyon.  The scenery is stunning, and the varying landscapes of rocky precipices, dry forests, and lush farmlands will amaze you.  After a climb out of the canyon, reach an altitude of over 12,000 feet and arrive at the awe-inspiring Quilotoa Crater Lake, which was formed after a catastrophic volcanic eruption about 800 years ago and still has a strange, unusual blue-green color due to the minerals that bubbled in from the earth's core.

The ride to Zumbahua will give great views of a fertile valley. Zumbahua is a farming town and on Saturdays has a farmers' market in the mornings, so this would be a great place to stop and get some fresh fruits to snack on as you head towards the more remote regions of Ecuador. You'll notice that most people here speak the language of the Incan Empire still - Quechua - and the townspeople are super friendly and welcoming.

Angamarca_CotopaxiAfter Zumbahua, you are again on unpaved dirt and gravel roads and through some of Ecuador's most picturesque regions. You will rise through the cloud forest, then into highlands pampa, where wild alpacas and llamas roam free.  You will get to a height here of about 13,500 feet.  Be prepared as the weather can change here quickly.  You'll see traditional mud homes here.  Inside, residents use guinea pigs to heat their homes in these cold, high elevations. Potatoes and lentils grow here, and it's the staple food for the people up here.

Then, you pass through the quaint, charming little town of Angamarca.  Angamarca means "Condor's Nest" in the native language, Quechua.  This town will give you insight into Ecuador's traditional life as things haven't changed much over the centuries. Curious townspeople will run out to greet you, as few people ever pass through this town.traditional mud home

You'll ride along sheer cliffs that give astounding views of a valley several hundred feet below.   The dirt road has a few small river crossings and very little traffic.  You will make another deep descent on the Western Slopes, into the town of El Corazon. Here, they brew and bottle their unique brand of strong liqueur.  It is an aquadiente that they flavor like bubblegum, coconut, pineapple, or chocolate. This is pure alcohol that is quite good yet inexpensive. El Corazon is a very friendly town and a solid place to stop for lunch.

road-to-angamarcaFrom El Corazon, we will again face challenging dirt roads that wind through thick jungles and arrive in the picturesque, isolated village of Simiatug, a place that seems like it hasn't changed much in the past 100 years. The town is usually full of horses with not a single car to be seen.  You will feel as though you have ridden into a time warp.Salinas de Guaranda

Taking the dirt road out of Simiatug, you will continue to ride and gain altitude on a series of switchback cobblestone and dirt trails.  The air through this section of the cloudforest is scented with wild orchids and tropical plants and will get cooler and cooler as you continue the climb.

You will cross a high mountain pass at around 13,000 feet before arriving in the village of Salinas de Guaranda. This town is unique in Ecuador as it has a Swiss heritage.   You will find a warm bed and friendly welcome at the new Cachi Yacu hotel, which opened in November 2018.  The night will be chilly as you will be sleeping at an altitude of about 11,500 feet, but you can warm yourself at the hotel's giant fireplace.

Day 4 - Quevedo

Elevation Profile - Day 4

Image
Day 4
Salinas-Arrayanes-Quevedo
Distance Covered:  82 miles / 132 km

You'll want to take some time this morning to explore this fascinating village. You'll enjoy the morning in the clean mountain air and the fascinating sights of the town of Salinas de Guaranda. Salinas has a fascinating and inspirational history. A little over 40 years ago, most of its residents were in extreme poverty and making pennies by selling milk and other produce to large producers.  They got together and decided to form a cooperative town economy with the goals of full employment, keep the young people from leaving town to the cities, and to better the standard of living for its residents. They learned to make cheese and chocolate from a Swiss philanthropist and began making a profit by selling high-quality cheese in Quito and other cities. With their cheese and chocolate production's success, they no longer live in mud huts, and their quality of life has improved dramatically. Over the years, they have expanded into other areas, with the townspeople voting on what investments they should make to share the profits. They now make hand-made soccer balls, wool yarn, herbal remedies, and several other natural products.

Take some time to enjoy a tour to show you the salt fountains (why Salinas has its name) and all of the diverse economic activities in this small town.  It is a fascinating and inspirational tale of success that these enterprising and optimistic residents will tell you in more detail.

Back on the bike, you'll head into the deep wilderness.  It is a ride along the edge of a steep precipice that will give you 100-mile views of the clouds and coastal plains below.  You'll ride among small family farmers with their pigs, donkeys, and cows along the roadside.  Chickens will cross the road for no apparent reason.

You will pass through high altitude Andean villages such as Arrayanes, a hamlet of about eight houses, where the villagers make a savory, ripened Andean Mountain cheese. Stop to get a taste and see the small operation. Other villages make Parmesan, Mozzarella, and different cheeses of milk from healthy and happy dairy cows. Here, the townspeople are very friendly and welcoming, as we motorcycle adventurers are the only ones ever to visit their villages. We encourage our riders to bring small gifts of pencils, crayons, toothbrushes, or other goodies for the kids here, as part of our Pack for a Purpose community initiative.

The air will get warmer as we descend once again deep into the rainforest.  Lemon, orange, and mandarin trees fill the air with new scents.  There are several clear rivers where you can cool yourself off with a quick swim.

As you get to sea-level, you'll be riding through expansive chocolate, banana, teak, and palm groves on a twisty, exhilarating road. Quevedo is an agricultural center and was the first Chinese settlement in Ecuador, and many of the Chinese restaurants date back to the 1920s. Be sure to try Ecuador's best Chinese-Ecuadorian cuisine before settling into the Hotel Olimpico for a great swim in its Olympic-size pool with waterslides and high dives, and get a good night's sleep in one of their well-appointed suites.

coastal ecuador dirt road for enduro motorcycle tourA hearty breakfast, including the local staple of a plantain, egg, and cheese bolon, will give you the energy you'll need for today's fun ride across the lower elevations of Ecuador's coastal region. The journey today can be described as a sort of stretched-out motocross track.  With rolling hills and exciting river crossings, you will face a new set of challenges.Husqvarna enduro motorcycle on a ferry in ecuador

You'll cross through a vast forest of teak. Teak has been highly prized for its strength and beauty.  Demand for the wood grown in sustainable teak groves such as this is fast-growing.  A stop here will provide you with a cacophony of various bird songs and the bass of the howler monkey.

dirt road for motorcycling in rolling hills in the cental lowlands of ecuadorYou'll cross part of the central reservoir using a motorized ferry. From there, it is a few more miles until the next crossing.  This can be done using the floating bridge or (for 4x4's) using a ferry located in the southern part of the reservoir. The floating bridge is a unique experience that you will never forget.

A climb to over 1,600 feet will give you beautiful views of the coastal plains below, and then a series of tight switchbacks will bring you off the small mountain range and into the flood plains of the coast.salto de armadillo waterfall in the central coastal region of ecuador as seen on a motorcycle tour

Here you will pass through the disorderly and dusty town of Chone. Choneros (people who live in Chone) are amiable, speak quickly, and laugh loudly. It is a good time for a snack here, and you can find the local specialty, cassava bread, sold on just about every corner. Morcilla is another local favorite. A pig's blood sausage with rice and spices is usually eaten with some plantain variation.

motorcycle above the bahia de caraquez and isla de corazon in ecuadorYou will be riding alongside the Chone River to the Bahia de Caraquez.  On your left side, you will see the Isla de Corazon, home to a colony of fishing birds that make this island an international birdwatcher's destination. You can take a tour of the island in a dugout canoe and, depending on the tides, ride the remaining 20 kilometers on a beautiful stretch of unpopulated beach. Motorcycle Suzuki DR650 on Canoa Beach at sunset 001

Your day ends in the town of San Clemente. San Clemente is home to a mixed population of native fishermen, transient surfers, and expatriate retirees seeking sun and relaxation. Our carefully selected accommodations are at the Casa de Terrazas Boutique Bed and Breakfast, steps from the beach, and with a great atmosphere thanks to its friendly, helpful owners and staff.

"Rest Day" in San Clemente

Break Day! Relaxation and sunshine! San Clemente has one of the best beaches on the Ecuadorian coast and is a favorite place for surfing.  Other available activities include paragliding, whale watching, horseback riding, or fishing.

three motorcyclists on a beach in manabi ecuador having a good timeYou can also take the bike out and explore the beautiful backcountry of Manabi Province.   Or take a boat expedition to explore the famous bird-watching mecca of El Corazon Island.  Corazon Island is a haven of mangroves, located between Bahia de Caraquez and San Vicente in the Chone River estuary in Manabi. Inside, there is a path through the mangroves where native guides interpret the mangrove's life and its rich biodiversity. It is a community ecotourism project that seeks to educate and preserve mangrove resources through its inhabitants and visitors' education.

Or, you can pull up a chair at some of the great hang-outs, beachside bars, and restaurants and enjoy a relaxing day away from the bike.

In the sleepy fishing town of Jama, the day's schedule is set by the tides.  You will see fishermen repairing their nets and working on their boats. Here you will take a ride on a dirt causeway between the brackish waters of the shrimp farms. G0446303

From here, you will continue up the coastline lined with deserted beaches and other small fishing villages. You'll cross over the Equator line once again unceremoniously to once again be in the Northern Hemisphere.

1 Ecuadorian Shrimp Ceviche 10The chaotic city of Pedernales is the closest beach to Quito and the center of Ecuador's shrimp trade. If you stop at any of the beachside restaurants, you can have garlic shrimp, fried shrimp, shrimp omelet, spiced shrimp, shrimp ceviche, battered shrimp, sweet and sour shrimp, shrimp with rice, shrimp cocktail, or any other dish that Bubba from Forrest Gump can think of. Whatever recipe you choose, it will be the plumpest, freshest shrimp you'll ever have in your life.

This is an extraordinary part of the coast, part of a marine life reserve.  You'll see an abundance of creatures along the shoreline here, from colorful crabs to raucous frogs to peaceful herons. You'll enjoy one of their delicious seafood plates at the restaurant by the beach, and you'll fall sound asleep with the rhythm of the waves.

We have included a tour of an award-winning chocolate producing farm.  Alejandro Solano and his wife Agustina own the Mashpi chocolate farm. Alejandro is one of the region's expert birders, able to recognize calls from a distance and zoom in to find the bird before it moves on.  The farm grows "Nacional trees" - known as the world's best chocolate - and creates Mashpi Artisanal Chocolate bars through an elaborate process. Alejandro and Agustina combine their passions-tending to cacao groves in the cloud forest shade to preserve the land and natural habitats of the rare species of birds here. The final product captures the richness of the climate, and like shade-grown coffee, has a depth of flavor not found using other growing techniques.   You will get to taste this famous chocolate on our tour of their farm.Cielo Verde Lodge Pool

Mashpi_forestWe have included a fascinating visit to their exotic fruit farm and research center that they operate.  Here they grow over 600 species of exotic fruits, herbs, and spices from all over the world.  Jim and his wife live in a rustic, two-story wooden house. The open structure, which is nestled into the dense forest, serves as a home and a business for Jim’s internationally renowned seed sales. There are bundles of colorful fruits or bags of seeds ready for mailing in every corner of the building. The couple has been living in this very remote location in the middle of the rainforest for over 30 years. When they started, they had to walk six hours through very dense vegetation to reach a dirt road with a bus service, and there was no electricity. For food, they mainly had to grow it themselves. They will have you taste some strange fruits, play a game of identifying spices and herbs from their unique scents, and see firsthand the extensive collection of rare trees and specimens in this fantastic fruity place.

You may want to stop a few times so that you can fully appreciate and take in this beautiful part of the world.  It is an area that National Geographic has made famous thanks to their expeditions in this area.

Here, you will enter the Rio Intag Valley -  known for the premium coffee grown in this region.  A do-not-miss stop is at the Nangulvi Hot Springs.  The small complex offers several pools at varying temperatures and a fantastic fixed-lunch restaurant at the edge of the roaring Intag River.

fresh coffee beans just harvested in ecuadorThe town of Apuela is home to the Rio Intag Coffee Growers' Association.  You should stop for a quick tour of their coffee drying, sorting, processing, and roasting operations.  You'll want to take a few bags of the coffee home with you.  They export their coffee around the world to exclusive coffee distributors. From Apuela, the cobblestone road climbs in elevation, then descends, then rises again, achieving great views. There are 100+ foot cascading waterfalls and fragrances of pine, eucalyptus, and something that smells like an artificial "rainforest fresh" air freshener - only this is the real thing and so so much better! You will arrive at the Cotacachi-Cayapas National Forest and the Cuicocha (guinea pig) lake - a crater lake thought by the indigenous people to be a tunnel to the Pacific Ocean. cuicocha lake ecuador motorcycle dirt bike adventure tour

The Otavaleños were skilled weavers even before the Incan rule. The Spanish set up workshops to employ the already skilled weavers, and soon, through technological advancements, the Otavalo weavers supplied textiles to most of Latin America.  Today the area has several wool mills and looms and produces high-quality fabrics.  A visit to the Indigenous market at the "Plaza de Los Ponchos" in the center of Otavalo is a feast for your eyes and an opportunity to bring back some great gifts for your friends and family.otavalo market spices ecuador motorcycle adventure tour

Tonight you are in for a treat - the renovated 17th century comfortable and luxurious Hacienda Cusin. Hacienda Cusin was purchased at an auction from Philip III, King of Spain, by the prominent Luna family in 1602. The purchased estate, an abraje or sheep farm, comprises two valleys of Gualaví and La Rinconada, and all the land between the valleys and the lake, approximately 100,000 acres/50,000 hectares, held until Land Reforms in 1945 and 1964. Hacienda Cusin was named for the mountain at the head of the valley of La Rinconada.

hacienda cusin roomThe mountain’s name is uncertain, although three possibilities are likely. First, Cusin was the name of an indigenous chief who fought against the Incas in the early 16th century, just before the Spaniards’ arrival. Secondly, a type of white beetle, a cuzo, cut-zo, (Quechua), a delicacy that appears briefly in November.  Cusin’s coat of arms, found on dishware and stationary, is a cuso’s carapace.

You'll enjoy a dinner featuring traditional, local culinary flavors and with a glass of wine in their elegant dining room. Then, settle into your room appointed with the high-quality textiles woven by hand here in Otavalo.

luis leather tanner in cotacachi motorcycle adventure dirt tourAfter a fine hacienda breakfast, you'll ride along the shore of Lake San Pablo, where the locals still cultivate the reeds to make baskets and other items. The first stop is in the town of Cotacachi, at the base of the Cotacachi Volcano.  Cotacachi is famous for its high-end leather goods and leather tanneries that still use traditional, vegetable methods of tanning leather.  You can meet a local leather tanner that uses traditional vegetal (not chemical) techniques to create high-quality hides.  There are many quaint shops in the center of town where you can get jackets, belts, wallets, and boots at fantastic prices. The city also has a thriving American and Canadian population where the local coffee and pastry shops serve as meeting places.climbing up from cahuasqui ecuador motorcycle dirt adventure

The route out of Cotacachi is on timeworn, winding cobblestone roads leading past grandiose farms producing long-stem roses and other cut flowers - one of the major exports of Ecuador.  The paths will cross through a series of small colonial towns with truly authentic fading pastel adobe buildings, iron street lights, and cobbled sidewalks.  Each village along the way will take you even further back in time.  You can stop for a soak and a bite to eat at the Chachimbiro Hot Springs - some of the most healing waters in Ecuador. The chemical composition of their water is high in iron, copper, iodine, and other minerals. The water regulates the digestive system and stimulates the cardiovascular and central nervous systems.

IMG_6348The last little town on this section of cobbled road is Cahausqui, and you'll take a dirt road to enter the Cotocachi-Cayapas Park once again.  This time it will be quite a dramatic entrance.  You will have 30% grades on unimproved dirt roads that will immediately bring you up and over the clouds gaining over 5,000 feet in under 2 miles.  In your rearview mirror, you'll catch a glimpse of the snow-capped Cayambe Volcano, far in the distance.  The road leads first through a magnificent pine forest, and then, once over the tree line, you'll be riding on a ride at over 13,000 feet in elevation.  You'll have tremendous views of the fertile valley below.  It can be a bit chilly up here, so be sure to add another layer.

cotocachi_cayapas_park_on_motorcycleFrom the peak, you'll ride down rocky switchbacks and back onto the Western Slopes of the Andes, and back into the green, mossy cloudforest.  As you cross rushing brooks and past waterfalls, there are more opportunities for a swim.  After passing the beautiful mountain pastures, you will arrive in the small village of La Merced de Buenos Aires.  Here is one of our favorite places to eat - in the little wooden restaurant that serves undeniably fresh trout, fished from the icy mountain streams surrounding the town.  The people are amicable here and are always surprised to see visitors from other lands in their small town.

dirt deluxe dirt bike motorcycle tour ecuador looking at cayambeSay adios to our friends in La Merced de Buenos Aires and continue towards the west on unimproved dirt farm roads.  You'll be riding through a series of small mountains that look like pyramids, passing trout fisheries, fruit, and coffee growers. Along this road are two schools that are part of our Pack for a Purpose community initiative.

You briefly join the E10 paved road at the ranger station checkpoint and then continue to descend in elevation. You take a narrow road out of the village of Limonal that leads deep into the western Andes' fertile mountainous

farmlands.  Following the roaring river with waterfalls will bring you through the hamlet of Primavera, and just outside, you will find the entrance to theHacienda Primavera Wilderness EcoLodge. You will spend the night in what we believe is one of the most exquisite wilderness lodges in the entire country.  Its location is truly in the wilderness, and this is a secret hideout for birdwatchers.road out of primavera

The lodge is located within the El Choco cloud forest reserve, which has primary and secondary forests. Guests often see a variety of rare tropical birds such as parrots and toucans. The lush forests surrounding the hacienda contain the most substantial flora and fauna per square meter than anywhere else in the world. The tropical forests are abundant in endemic species, epiphytes, and orchids.

The Ecolodge has large rooms, spacious suites, a gourmet restaurant, a beautiful spring-fed pool, and a working horse and cattle ranch. The staff will be happy to show you around, including the coffee plantation on the premises.

HIgh Elevations in El Angel Park on a dirt bike motorcycle adventure in Ecuador We've made this day a little shorter so you can relax and enjoy the beautiful Hacienda Primavera to the max.  The hacienda serves up outstanding breakfasts, with flapjacks, French toast, eggs, and fresh coffee grown right there.  So enjoy.enduro off road motorcycles riding on a tour in northern ecuador

The ride out of the rainforest and jungle on the dirt roads out of Primavera is outstanding.  You will pass several waterfalls and rolling brooks before climbing over a mountain pass in the Golondrina Protected Forest.  You will enter another valley and the small town of El Chical.  You're now on the border with Colombia, and the communities here grow coffee, cacao, and exotic fruits.  It is an idyllic part of the country nestled in a beautiful setting of mountains.

riding a husqvarna enduro motorcycle at high elevations in el angel park on the border with colombia in ecuadorFrom El Chical, you will follow the Colombian border to the town of Maldonado.  Maldonado is home to the Golondrina Coffee Growers' Association. Here you can get a taste of the coffee and a quick tour of how they grow, process, and roast their coffee grown throughout this region.  In Maldonado, you will see a lot of people with red-stained fingers from picking coffee or raspberries.  The coop’s members have created reforestation programs with the local communities. Its members are encouraged to utilize organic practices to prevent further erosion and soil depletion.  If you want to bring back coffee, that is the rage of coffee snobs around the world - here is another chance!

The plant's leaves are hairy and serve to protect this exotic plant from the frigid climate that hits this region. Other beautiful flowers in this area are the El Angel Flowers, which look very similar to the Frailejones with their hairy leaves and yellow flowers.  In the park, you will go over the Volcan Chiles pass at about 13,500 feet and then ride along the green volcanic lakes. It is a fantastic landscape, unlike any other place on Earth.

Once down from the Volcan Chiles pass, you follow an ancient cobblestone road to Colombia's border. Right on the border is the Tufiño Hot Springs. As you approach them, you will smell the sulfur from the source pools higher up - which are fenced off because they can be overpowering.  But below, in the springs, the water is hot, and a 10-minute soak will reduce your blood pressure significantly.

You'll take curvy paved roads into Tulcan - the capital of Carchi Province, a border town, just 7 km from Colombia.  Tulcan is famous for its Topiary cemetery - have a stop here to see all the fantastic shrubs carved into animals and figures.  It is amazing.  You might want to sip the local drink called "norteña" at the newly remodeled central market, which serves up other local culinary delights.la lajas sanctuary in ipiales colombia motorcycle adventure tour destination

You can take a short taxi ride to Colombia's border, where you will change to a Colombian taxi. Have it take you to the Sanctuary de Lajas. This amazing catholic basilica was built after a young girl miraculously saw the Virgin Mary appear before her at this rocky gorge.  The site became a pilgrimage site when it became known to have healing powers. Las Lajas Sanctuary is practically hanging over the abyss, and this is one reason it is considered the most beautiful church in Colombia. It took 33 years (between 1916 and 1949) to finish the present church, and local churchgoers financed it.

Riding in dry desert to alaburo on dirt bike tour ecuador deluxe

KTM 690 Enduro in mudFrom Tulcan -  take the old Panamerican Highway to the picturesque town of El Angel.  Please don't get confused by the name; it is a devilish section of dirt road reserved for experienced riders.  From El Angel, you'll take a paved highway to drop several thousand feet into a new climate.  You'll experience a huge change from the high elevation rainforest - you're now in the very arid desert.

You take a turn off the Panamerican highway onto another ancient cobblestone road - this is the original highway between Colombia and Ecuador - the one that Simon de Bolivar once traveled.  The road is lined with various cactus, and you'll see herds of goats shepherded by people in the traditional indigenous dress. You will ride through the valley and town of Chota. The population of the town is of African descent.  In the 17th and 18th centuries, their ancestors arrived in Ecuador as slaves for Jesuit mines and sugar cane plantations.  Besides, there was a thriving agricultural trade in coca and cotton.

Today the people still make their living raising sugar cane and animals such as goats and pigs.  They brew a strong alcoholic beverage known as aguardiente.  They are peaceful, fun, and friendly, and distinctive culture in this proud little valley.

hacienda piman roomThis landscape is the setting of the magnificent Hacienda Piman - a place we chose for its unique location and luxurious rooms.  The lodge is a working horse farm that also grows aloe and other medicinal herbs.   The setting is stunning - in the desert surrounded by silver mountains. The pool and dining facilities are top-notch. You'll enjoy a room with magnificent private views.

Aloburo - Ibarra - Cayambe - Oyacachi - Papallacta
Distance Covered: 169 km / 105 miles

riding motorcycle cobbled streets of ibarra ecuador dirt bike tourToday will be another significant change in climate, culture, and terrains. You'll head out of the desert and around the tranquil shores of Laguna Yaguarcocha (Blood Lake). It is here in 1495 that Inca leader Huayna Capac inflicted the final defeat on the local Cara people. Between 20,000 and 50,000 Cara were slain and their bodies dumped into the lake, turning the waters crimson.  The Cara were such highly respected warriors that the surviving were employed as Royal Incan Bodyguards. Today's lake is much more tranquil and lined with Tortora reeds, which are woven to make mats and canoes. The wide road around the lake is also the racetrack where races take place every year. helado

Then you'll ride through the historic center of Ibarra - founded in 1606 and known as the "White City" for its whitewashed colonial buildings. Here are stately squares overlooked by grand churches and colonial buildings sheltering garden courtyards. Ibarra's most delicious treats are helados de paila.  This sorbet rivals anything you will find on the streets of Rome or gourmet restaurants in any part of the world. Amazingly, the only ingredients are ice, sugar, salt, and fruit. The original shop of Rosalia Suarez - the originator of helados de paila - is a stop on the tour. You'll want to find your favorite flavor.

cayambe equator motorcycle adventure tourSouth of Ibarra, you'll be riding on beautiful curvy roads through a patchwork of green fields. You'll pass through the town of Zuleta - famous for their needlework. The President of Ecuador often wears shirts that were stitched by the artisans of Zuleta. You'll meet Jaime - a saddlemaker carrying on his family business of creating the finest saddles. It takes him about three months to make each saddle exported to discerning clients around the world.

trout_in_oyacachi

Towering over the town of Cayambe is the Volcano of the same name - the only place on Earth where the Equator passes over snow.  Cayambe is the regional center of Ecuador's flower industry and is well-known for its bizcochos - a rich buttery cookie.  Once past Cayambe, you will have a chance to stand in two hemispheres simultaneously at the Quitsato equator monument. The monument is a giant sundial, 54 meters across, with a 10-meter high cylinder placed precisely on the Equator. With this sundial, you can not only tell the time but the day of the year.  The guides on the site will show you how to do it.  The monument is in honor of the ancient regional cultures who well understood these techniques of charting celestial movements and knew the position of the Equator, long before "more advanced" civilizations. The museum on site will explain how they were able to do this.

cayambe_coca_1Once in the southern hemisphere, turn onto a tan obscure cobblestone road that will take you up the Cayambe Volcano slopes and into the Coca-Cayambe National Ecological Reserve. This park is one of Ecuador's most protected natural areas, and a special permit is required for entry.

With your advanced reservation, we will secure the permit for you and the vehicle (which is a very complicated bureaucratic procedure you do not want to attempt on your own!). The park contains some 900 species of birds, and we have personally seen wild puma and bear in the park.

Ride into the town of Oyacachi, where the descendants of those who fled the massacre at Laguna Yaguarcocha settled. The town has beautiful hot springs with pools at various temperatures where you can soak and relax. You can have lunch at one of the simple restaurants that can prepare the local trout - from the crystal clear waters that run through here. They cook the trout over a wood fire. Their special traditional cooking techniques that will probably have you say that this is the best trout you have ever had in your life!

papallacta_cabin

From Oyacachi, you'll pass through the more remote regions of the park, through the high paramo terrain. There are a few stunning glacial lakes here that you should stop to see. Many people say this resembles the highlands of Scotland. You may catch photos of the condor or mountain toucan in this area.

You'll end the day's ride soaking your limbs in your private hot spring bath outside your private adobe thatched cabin at the Termas Papallacta  Hot Springs Spa & Resort. There is no better way to relax than staying at this award-winning luxury resort, high in the Andes. After a full day of riding, you will deserve the pampering!

Today is a day for relaxation.  You'll enjoy your luxurious cabin and can take some time to explore the trails surrounding the resort.
They offer many unique spa treatments and horseback riding in the area.  Guapulo

Your ride back to Quito starts by riding over the Papallacta pass - the continental divide at 13,400 feet.  You'll ride back into Quito on the same cobbled road that Francisco de Orellana walked on his mission to find the fountain of youth for the King and Queen of Spain.  On the way back up to Quito, have a stop to see the Guapulo Church and stop in the art galleries of this bohemian neighborhood, which hangs perilously off the side of the cliff.

For those looking for additional riding on the last day, we can provide an alternate route to visit the Laguna Muerto Pungo - a beautiful unpaved road through highlands paramo.

About Our Offroad Tours

What to Expect

This 14-day self-guided motorcycle adventure tour will start in our offices in the Carolina neighborhood of Quito.  Before your departure, we will provide you with a detailed and thoughtful presentation on the written and unwritten rules of the road, customs, and courtesies in Ecuador. We will instruct you on how to operate your pre-programmed GPS navigation unit. We will hand you a packet with your prepaid hotel vouchers and daily map sheets. The roadbook will provide points of interest, descriptions of local highlights, and "hidden gems" that aren't common knowledge. The route will be reviewed with you in detail to provide additional useful information about the timing, suggestions for lunch stops, and where to get gas along the way. You can use this information to tailor your days - including as much or as little as you like.

On the morning of your departure, you will be outfitted with the off-road-capable motorcycle (or 4x4) of your choice. The vehicle is fitted with a waterproof luggage system, a first aid kit, a tankbag (if you want one), spare innertubes (or tire repair kit), and a set of tools. You will have a prepaid local cell phone to call us for support anytime during your trip.  We will carefully review the bike with you using our multi-point checklist to ensure everything is in perfect working order before your departure. We will ensure you know what to do in case of an emergency or breakdown.

You may use our lockers and storage area to store your luggage and belongings that you will not take with you on the ride.

The route you will follow over the next fourteen days is based on several years of experience and riding these routes on our guided tours.  The route is not highly technical. It is a dual-sport tour, with a mix of paved backroads and natural, unimproved dirt roads.  The tour is mostly on unpaved roads and avoids the pavement as much as possible, taking you to places seldom visited by outsiders. Several stops are available, marked on the GPS unit and the daily route sheets.

You should be aware that you will be traveling in areas where access to medical care may be several hours away.

You will have many opportunities for amazing photos and stops in remote villages where visitors are very rare. Locals are friendly, and the areas visited are very safe, with very low crime rates.

Ecuador Freedom staff will monitor your daily progress during your ride using an onboard GPS satellite tracking system. We can assist you by telephone if you need to change your route, roadside assistance, or need help in any way.

Upon returning, you will have access to our honor bar, jacuzzi, hot shower, and staff that can assist you with your next destination.

Weather and Temperatures

Weather and temperature ranges in Ecuador are generally the same year-round. You can expect the chance of passing showers in the highlands but rarely a full day of rain.  Chances for a full day of rain are more likely on the western slopes of the Andes in March, April, and early May.  This ride will be in elevations from sea level (where temperatures can be around 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit) to about 13,500 feet (where temperatures can be in the 30's Fahrenheit). Dressing in layers is recommended.  Please see this article for more information about the weather in Ecuador.

Accommodations
Throughout the tour, you will stay in carefully selected accommodations with many amenities and upgraded, superior rooms or suites. when available, See this page for details, photos, and links to the hotel accommodations. Breakfast is included for each overnight stay, and dinners are included when staying in an area without other dining options. Ecuador Freedom has the right to substitute accommodations of equal quality due to availability and will notify you of these changes.

Packing List and Preparation
Ecuador Freedom will provide detailed information to prepare for the ride, including a packing list. Please also read our article entitled Preparing for a Self-Guided Tour: The Essentials.  You should know how to make general motorcycle repairs and maintenance and be able to change an innertube (click for a video tutorial).  Before traveling, we recommend you familiarize yourself with these guidebooks and maps.
