This nine-day self-guided motorcycle tour is built for riders who want access, perspective, and great roads—without the constraints of a group schedule. Ecuador makes that possible in a way few countries can. In a single, well-designed route, you move from the high Andes to the Amazon Basin and on to the Pacific Coast, crossing major climate zones and cultures without spending days in transit.
The riding is entirely on paved roads (with optional offroad sections), chosen for low traffic, strong flow, and scenery that changes quickly and often. One day you’re riding high mountain passes and fertile valleys; the next you’re descending into rainforest or following the coastline. The distances are manageable, the routes are intentional, and every riding day has a clear purpose.
This is a self-guided experience, but it’s not improvised. The itinerary, navigation, and accommodations are arranged in advance, allowing you to focus on the ride rather than logistics. You travel independently, yet with the confidence that comes from local expertise, detailed route planning, and ongoing support throughout the journey.
For riders who care more about quality than speed, and who want to understand where they’re riding—not just pass through it—this tour delivers Ecuador the way it should be experienced: one well-chosen road at a time.

Elevation Profile - Day 1

Day 1
Quito-Inti'ñan-Pululahua Crater-Bellavista-Mindo
You'll begin this 9-day/8-night "Andes, Amazon and Pacific Coast" self-guided motorcycle tour from our shop in Quito, Ecuador. In 1978, Quito became the first place on the planet to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for having the best-preserved historic center in all of Latin America. Quito is high on the Altiplano Plateau (the second highest in the world) in the Andes at 9,350 feet. We suggest that you arrive a day or two early to experience our magnificent capital city while getting acclimated to the high altitude before beginning the tour.
During the first morning of the tour, you'll be outfitted with the motorcycle of your choice and given a thorough orientation answering all questions concerning local customs, rules of the road, Ecuadorian driver courtesies, and more. We will show you how to operate your pre-programmed GPS unit with daily routes and be given a "Road Book" with details and points of interest for each day. We will also provide an "emergency kit" containing a pre-paid cell phone, first aid kit, tools, and other items to ensure your ride goes smoothly.
On the first day, we purposefully selected a route that includes a sampling of the different types of roads that you will be riding. You will have the opportunity to safely become accustomed to asphalt, dry gravel, cobblestone, and dirt farm roads.
Inti-ñan means "path of the Sun" in the Quechua language, and the Inti-ñan Museum is situated directly on the Equator. The indigenous peoples have revered this site for thousands of years. You will learn how ancient people came to understand that this was the center of the world centuries before the advent of modern geography or GPS devices. During your first stop directly on the "red line," you will experiment with gravity, including witnessing how water drains either clockwise or counter-clockwise, depending on which side of the Equator you are standing. You will also have the opportunity to see how Ecuador's indigenous populations live by visiting their homes' models. These visits will enable you to understand better the cultures and ways of life that you will experience as we pass through the various regions.
Departing the Inti-ñan Museum, you are now officially outside of the Quito metropolitan region and have begun riding in the Northern Hemisphere. Your second stop is to view the beautiful Pululahua Crater Geo-Botanical Reserve, a crater formed by a volcanic eruption 2,500 years ago. From there, head onto the Andes' western slopes full of dense, green forests, massive waterfalls, and steep mountains. Riding the sharp curves is sure to be exhilarating fun.
We recommend that you have lunch in the garden of a fantastic restaurant in the heart of the cloudforest. You'll watch in amazement as hundreds of colorful birds surround you as you enjoy lunch.
Changing the pace a little bit, you'll take a left turn off the main highway and venture onto an unpaved, unmarked road that leads even deeper into the cloudforest. Here, at the world-famous Bellavista Cloudforest Bird Lodge, take a break on their fantastic patio and watch hundreds of hummingbirds flitting around you. These are all of a completely different species than the birds seen at lunch. There is no other place on earth where you can view so many species of birds. Note that the unpaved section is optional - you can continue along the newly paved highway to Mindo if you are not comfortable riding on unpaved roads- select the paved option in the programmed GPS.
Continue through the lush cloudforest along clear streams with cascading waterfalls to the funky, eclectic town of Mindo. Mindo is situated in a warm microclimate cloudforest that's known for its natural beauty and great restaurants. You can visit the Yumbo chocolate factory for a tour that entertains while educating about organic cocoa's farming and processing and how it is turned into chocolate and formed into bars. You will want to sample this chocolate, as Ecuador produces the best chocolate in the world.
After you visit Yumbo Chocolate, check into the carefully-selected accommodations for the night deep in the cloudforest setting at the charming Septimo Paraiso Cloudforest Reserve Lodge, winner of many international awards.

What to Expect
This self-guided motorcycle adventure begins and ends in Quito, Ecuador, offering independence while benefiting from years of expert route design. Over nine days, you’ll ride through the Andes Mountains, the Amazon Basin, and the Pacific Coast, experiencing dramatic changes in climate, scenery, and culture that are rarely found within a single journey.
Start in Quito
Your tour departs from our Quito location in the Carolina neighborhood, one of the city’s most convenient and vibrant areas, with hotels, cafés, galleries, and museums nearby. We recommend arriving one or two days early to explore the city, acclimate to the altitude, and ensure a smooth, relaxed start to your ride.
Pre-Ride Briefing: Setting You Up for Success
Before departure, you will participate in a comprehensive pre-ride briefing. When schedules allow, this briefing can be arranged for the afternoon before your first riding day to streamline your morning departure.
This briefing is a key part of the experience and provides detailed, practical information that goes far beyond basic orientation. You’ll receive an in-depth overview of the daily routes, major sights, and recommended stops along the way, along with important local insights that help you understand what you’re seeing as you ride. We also cover Ecuadorian traffic laws, road customs, fuel planning, and riding considerations specific to each region. The goal is to ensure you begin the tour confident, informed, and well prepared.
Motorcycle, Navigation & Preparation
On the morning your tour begins, you’ll be outfitted with your fully equipped motorcycle of choice, complete with a luggage system. You’ll also receive a pre-programmed GPS unit with daily routes already loaded, along with a detailed Road Book that provides day-by-day route information, cultural context, and notes on points of interest you may encounter.
For added peace of mind, all self-guided tours include GPS tracking. We monitor your progress throughout the day to ensure you reach your destination safely and on schedule. This system allows our team to assist if needed—whether that means providing guidance, coordinating help, or responding quickly in the event of an unexpected situation. You ride independently, but you are never truly on your own.
This is a paved-road tour. The routes follow smooth, scenic paved backroads that minimize heavy traffic while delivering engaging, rewarding riding. The itinerary is designed to balance riding time and sightseeing so that each day flows naturally within the structure of the planned route.
As a self-guided tour, you are responsible for managing your daily schedule within the framework of the itinerary provided.
Accommodations & Inclusions
This tour is designed to remove logistical complexity while preserving freedom. Accommodations are arranged in advance, routes are professionally planned, and navigation is handled for you.
The tour includes eight nights of accommodations, eight breakfasts, and three dinners, along with your motorcycle, luggage system, GPS navigation, and Road Book. This allows you to focus on the ride and the experience rather than trip logistics.
Weather & Temperatures
Weather and temperature ranges in Ecuador are generally consistent year-round. You can expect the possibility of passing showers in the highlands, but full days of rain are uncommon. The likelihood of a full day of rain increases on the western slopes of the Andes during March, April, and early May.
This ride spans a wide range of elevations, from sea level—where temperatures can reach around 90°F (32°C)—to approximately 14,500 feet, where temperatures can drop into the 30s°F (around 0–4°C). Dressing in layers is strongly recommended to remain comfortable throughout the journey.
For more detailed information, please see this article about the weather in Ecuador:
After the Ride
Upon returning to Quito, you’ll have access to our after-ride amenities, including a hot shower, jacuzzi, and comfortable lounge space. Our staff can also assist with onward travel plans, additional rentals, or recommendations for extending your stay.
Accommodations
Our accommodations are selected for their exceptional quality, location, and unique character. Below are the accommodations featured on this tour.

Since the only place they grow in the world is along the equatorial belt, their bare branches were thought to be roots that kept the world attached to heaven. They flower only once every five years and can store thousands of liters of water in their massive trunks.

From Zumbahua, you are now on the famous "Quilotoa Loop" - famous for its incredible scenery and the astonishing Quilotoa Crater Lake. You can stop at the lake to admire its odd blue-green color from the minerals left after a catastrophic volcanic eruption created it only about 800years ago. The indigenous people are friendly here and wear their traditional dress. Here they farm potatoes, sheep, llama, chickens, and dairy cows.
You'll pass through the town of Sigchos, an early Spanish settlement built upon an ancient indigenous trading post. From here, it is another series of switchbacks down into a lush valley. Then, up again and across a wide paramo where you will catch your first glimpses of the world's highest active volcano, Cotopaxi. You will be riding towards Cotopaxi and through other towns dedicated to the art of growing roses.

Wake up in the crisp mountain air surrounded by a breathtaking view of the Cotopaxi volcano. You will have an excellent Ecuadorian country breakfast served up in the Hacienda. It is going to be a long day in the saddle, so make sure you eat well. The early morning sun in this part of the country lights up the canyons and farmlands so beautifully. As you ride, you will see the snowcapped Illiniza and Cotopaxi volcanoes out in the distance.

Take a right, turning onto a road that follows the Napo River, and go deeper into the Amazon jungle. The Napo River is the fifth most significant tributary to the Amazon River.
