This 14-day self-guided Ecuaduro Enduro motorcycle or 4x4 adventure is built for riders and explorers who crave the real thing — the raw, untamed beauty of Ecuador’s backroads and the satisfaction that only comes from conquering them on your own terms.
Over two weeks, you’ll trace a loop through Ecuador’s most diverse landscapes — a country that seems to reinvent itself every hundred kilometers. The route winds from the high ridgelines of the Andes down through mist-drenched cloud forests, across fertile valleys and rural farmlands, and out to the Pacific coast before climbing again through volcano country. Along the way, you’ll cross ancient cobblestone roads, winding dirt tracks, and high-altitude passes where the air thins and the horizon explodes into color.
You’ll stand on the Equator itself, ride along crater rims, and descend into towns where time still moves at a different pace. You’ll soak in volcanic hot springs under the stars, wander through bustling indigenous markets in Otavalo, taste coffee roasted by hand in the cloudforest, and cool off beneath hidden waterfalls. The contrasts are staggering — one day you’re wrapped in mountain fog, the next you’re watching the sunset over the Pacific.
Each night brings a new kind of comfort — from historic haciendas to boutique beach lodges to wilderness ecolodges, surrounded by birdsong and the sound of running water. These aren’t just places to sleep; they’re part of the story. Every host brings their own warmth, every meal reflects its region, and every stop feels earned.
You’ll have a pre-programmed GPS, detailed route sheets, and 24-hour support from the Ecuador Freedom team — but once you twist that throttle, this journey belongs entirely to you.
This is Ecuador as few ever see it — wild, welcoming, and unforgettable.

Itinerary
Elevation Profile - Day 1
Quito – Inti’ñan – Nono – Mindo
Distance Covered: 114 km / 71 miles
The ride begins high in the Andes, in Quito—a city balanced on volcanic slopes at 9,350 feet. Declared the world’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, Quito’s historic core feels frozen in another century, with cobblestone plazas, bright facades, and church bells echoing through thin mountain air. Arrive a day or two early if you can: the altitude takes a little getting used to, and so does the idea that you’re about to ride across an entire country.
The morning starts at the Ecuador Freedom headquarters, where your motorcycle or 4×4 awaits—checked, fueled, and ready. We’ll walk you through local customs, road etiquette, and the quirks of Ecuadorian driving. You’ll be handed your pre-programmed GPS, daily route sheets, and a Road Book loaded with points of interest. Add a prepaid cell phone, first-aid kit, and tools, and you’ve got everything you need for self-sufficiency on the road ahead.
Today’s route is an introduction to Ecuador’s variety of terrain: asphalt, ancient cobblestone, dirt farm tracks, and the kind of compacted clay that keeps you alert. It’s a warm-up lap for what’s to come.
Just outside the city, you’ll stop at the Inti’ñan Museum—literally, the “Path of the Sun.” This interactive museum sits right on the Equator, where you can balance an egg on a nail or watch water swirl in opposite directions on either side of the line. It’s part science, part magic, and a reminder that Ecuador sits at the exact center of the world in more ways than one.
From there, you’ll ride to the rim of the Pululahua Crater, a massive volcanic caldera that erupted some 2,500 years ago and is now carpeted with farms and forest. Few riders ever get to see a volcano from the inside looking out. Then the route drops down the western slopes of the Andes, where the air warms, the trees close in, and the smell of wet earth replaces the thin chill of Quito.
The road narrows toward the village of Nono, gateway to the Nono Biological Reserve—one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Stop at Bellavista Bird Lodge, shut off the engines, and wait. Within minutes, the forest fills with movement—tanagers, hummingbirds, and flashes of color that seem almost unreal.
Continue your descent into the misty cloudforest of Mindo, a lively little town famous for its birdlife, chocolate, and offbeat energy. Visit a local cacao maker to see how raw beans turn into Ecuador’s celebrated dark chocolate—grown, roasted, and crafted on-site. Then ride deeper into the forest to reach your lodge for the night, the Terrazas de Dana Boutique Lodge, where private cabins overlook the valley and the sounds of water and birdsong replace traffic and city noise.
It’s an ideal first day—Quito’s high-altitude bustle behind you, Mindo’s lush canopy ahead, and the realization that the adventure has truly begun.
Did You Know?
The Pululahua Crater is one of only two inhabited volcanic craters in the world. Farmers live and work inside the caldera, growing maize and potatoes in its rich volcanic soil. Meanwhile, Mindo’s cloudforest is part of a global biodiversity hotspot—home to more than 500 species of birds and some of the finest cacao on Earth.

About Our Offroad Tours
What to Expect
This 14-day self-guided motorcycle adventure tour will start in our offices in the Carolina neighborhood of Quito. Before your departure, we will provide you with a detailed and thoughtful presentation on the written and unwritten rules of the road, customs, and courtesies in Ecuador. We will instruct you on how to operate your pre-programmed GPS navigation unit. We will hand you a packet with your prepaid hotel vouchers and daily map sheets. The roadbook will provide points of interest, descriptions of local highlights, and "hidden gems" that aren't common knowledge. The route will be reviewed with you in detail to provide additional useful information about the timing, suggestions for lunch stops, and where to get gas along the way. You can use this information to tailor your days - including as much or as little as you like.
On the morning of your departure, you will be outfitted with the off-road-capable motorcycle (or 4x4) of your choice. The vehicle is fitted with a waterproof luggage system, a first aid kit, a tankbag (if you want one), spare innertubes (or tire repair kit), and a set of tools. You will have a prepaid local cell phone to call us for support anytime during your trip. We will carefully review the bike with you using our multi-point checklist to ensure everything is in perfect working order before your departure. We will ensure you know what to do in case of an emergency or breakdown.
You may use our lockers and storage area to store your luggage and belongings that you will not take with you on the ride.
The route you will follow over the next fourteen days is based on several years of experience and riding these routes on our guided tours. The route is not highly technical. It is a dual-sport tour, with a mix of paved backroads and natural, unimproved dirt roads. The tour is mostly on unpaved roads and avoids the pavement as much as possible, taking you to places seldom visited by outsiders. Several stops are available, marked on the GPS unit and the daily route sheets.
You should be aware that you will be traveling in areas where access to medical care may be several hours away.
You will have many opportunities for amazing photos and stops in remote villages where visitors are very rare. Locals are friendly, and the areas visited are very safe, with very low crime rates.
Ecuador Freedom staff will monitor your daily progress during your ride using an onboard GPS satellite tracking system. We can assist you by telephone if you need to change your route, roadside assistance, or need help in any way.
Upon returning, you will have access to our honor bar, jacuzzi, hot shower, and staff that can assist you with your next destination.
Weather and Temperatures
Weather and temperature ranges in Ecuador are generally the same year-round. You can expect the chance of passing showers in the highlands but rarely a full day of rain. Chances for a full day of rain are more likely on the western slopes of the Andes in March, April, and early May. This ride will be in elevations from sea level (where temperatures can be around 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit) to about 13,500 feet (where temperatures can be in the 30's Fahrenheit). Dressing in layers is recommended. Please see this article for more information about the weather in Ecuador.
Accommodations
Throughout the tour, you will stay in carefully selected accommodations with many amenities and upgraded, superior rooms or suites. when available, See this page for details, photos, and links to the hotel accommodations. Breakfast is included for each overnight stay, and dinners are included when staying in an area without other dining options. Ecuador Freedom has the right to substitute accommodations of equal quality due to availability and will notify you of these changes.
Packing List and Preparation
Ecuador Freedom will provide detailed information to prepare for the ride, including a packing list. Please also read our article entitled Preparing for a Self-Guided Tour: The Essentials. Leaving Mindo, you’ll climb out of the misty forest and onto one of the most scenic stretches of pavement in Ecuador. The road twists through the cloud-forest town of San Miguel de Los Bancos, then coils into a series of perfect switchbacks that seem purpose-built for two wheels. After crossing the roaring Río Blanco—a white-water rafting hotspot—you’ll turn off the asphalt and onto a winding unpaved track that threads through remote farmland and tiny villages where time has its own pace.
From Las Pampas the climb steepens, switchback after switchback, until you reach the high Andes again. The landscape opens into a windswept plateau at roughly 13,000 feet. It’s cold, the air razor-thin, and the light so clean it looks almost metallic. Wild alpacas wander across the road; guinea pigs dart between clumps of grass. From here, the descent toward Sigchos feels like gliding in slow motion through the clouds. Once a pre-Columbian trading post and later a Spanish town founded in the 1530s, Sigchos still carries that layered history in its cobbled streets and quiet plazas.
The final leg from Sigchos to Chugchilán is now fully paved, making for a smooth, scenic ride along mountain ridgelines and deep valleys. This stretch—part of the famed Quilotoa Loop—remains one of the most beautiful routes in Ecuador. Terraced fields cling to the hillsides, clouds drift below the road, and every curve offers a new postcard view.
You’ll end the day in the small Andean village of Chugchilán at the

After a hearty breakfast at Mama Hilda’s, you’ll roll out of Chugchilán and drop down a dirt road that clings to the side of a canyon. The descent is steep, the air thin and clear, and every turn reveals another slice of rugged Andean scenery—rocky cliffs giving way to dry valleys, then to green terraces stitched with crops. Climbing out again, you’ll crest the rim of the magnificent Quilotoa Crater Lake. Formed by a volcanic eruption around 800 years ago, the lake’s surreal turquoise hue comes from minerals rising from deep within the earth.
From here, the road winds toward Zumbahua, overlooking a fertile valley where farmers work the fields by hand. On Saturdays, the town bursts to life with its weekly market—an excellent place to sample fresh fruit or pick up snacks for the road ahead. Most of the locals still speak Quechua, the ancient language of the Inca, and their warmth and hospitality make even a brief stop unforgettable.
Beyond Zumbahua, the road turns rough again, climbing into high-altitude grasslands known as the páramo. The landscape opens wide and silent—mist, llamas, alpacas, and the soft sound of wind over the plains. At over 13,000 feet, the weather can shift in minutes. Small earthen homes dot the hillsides, and locals use guinea pigs to generate heat inside their mud-brick walls. Here, life still follows centuries-old rhythms of planting, harvesting, and herding.
Descending from the highlands, you’ll reach Angamarca—its name means “Condor’s Nest” in Quechua. It’s a small mountain town that feels untouched by time. Curious locals often come out to wave as riders pass, their friendliness a reminder of the genuine connection possible on roads few outsiders ever travel.
The route then follows cliffside roads with sweeping valley views and the occasional shallow river crossing before reaching the town of El Corazón. Known for its homemade aguardiente—a potent sugar-cane spirit flavored with coconut, pineapple, or chocolate—El Corazón is an ideal lunch stop and a chance to chat with the locals.
After El Corazón, the ride turns rugged again through forested switchbacks and quiet villages where horses still outnumber cars. In Simiatug, a picturesque mountain community, life moves at a pace that seems a century behind. The climb continues through misty forest scented with orchids and moss, leading to a final high-altitude pass before dropping into Salinas de Guaranda—a small Andean town with an unexpected Swiss influence. Tonight’s rest is at the comfortable Cachi Yacu Hotel, where you’ll warm up by the fireplace after a long, rewarding day on the road.

High-altitude hamlets like Arrayanes appear along the way—tiny clusters of stone houses and dairy sheds. The villagers here make a ripened Andean mountain cheese with deep, nutty flavor. Stop to taste it and chat with the cheesemakers; visitors are rare and always welcome. Nearby, other communities produce mozzarella and parmesan from the milk of grass-fed cows. Riders are encouraged to carry small gifts such as pencils or crayons for the children, part of the
As the road drops from the high Andes, the air turns warm and sweet. Citrus trees line the route—lemons, oranges, mandarins—and their scent mixes with the damp earth of the rainforest. Clear rivers appear beside the track, tempting a quick stop to cool your hands before continuing the descent.
Near sea level, the scenery shifts again: vast groves of cacao, banana, teak, and palm stretch to the horizon. You’re entering Quevedo, a lively agricultural hub and Ecuador’s first Chinese settlement. Many family-run chifas trace their roots back to the 1920s, serving excellent Ecuadorian–Chinese cuisine—think roast duck with crisp skin, bright tamarind sauces, wok-fired fresh shrimp, and vegetables harvested from the same fields you just rode past. After a good day of relaxation, you'll hop back on the bike and head up the coast further north today. If the tides are right, you will start the morning's ride with a 20-kilometer beach ride up to the small city of Bahia de Caraquez. Then, you'll ride through the rolling hills and cattle farms along the Pacific coast of the province of Manabi.

Further up the coast, a visit to the friendly surf mecca of Mompiche is a pleasant diversion. Here you can enjoy fresh coconut juice while you watch the local surfers ply their trade, surfing between the local fishermen. Mompiche offers one of the biggest left point breaks in South America and attracts surfers from around the world.

You will arrive at the small town of Quininde, known for its roadside fruit stands that sell fruits you probably have never heard of. From here, you will head into the forests on a dirt road that will take you to the banks of the
The landscape will change again, and you will pass immense fields of the cabbage palm tree. These are what you probably know as "hearts of palm" that adorn salads around the world. You can stop to meet a cabbage palm farmer (location in GPS) and open up this tree's stalk to taste a fresh heart of palm. The light, crisp taste, and texture are delicious and nothing at all like the canned variety.

From the peak, you'll ride down rocky switchbacks and back onto the Western Slopes of the Andes, and back into the green, mossy cloudforest. As you cross rushing brooks and past waterfalls, there are more opportunities for a swim. After passing the beautiful mountain pastures, you will arrive in the small village of La Merced de Buenos Aires. Here is one of our favorite places to eat - in the little wooden restaurant that serves undeniably fresh trout, fished from the icy mountain streams surrounding the town. The people are amicable here and are always surprised to see visitors from other lands in their small town.

From Tulcan - take the old Panamerican Highway to the picturesque town of El Angel. Please don't get confused by the name; it is a devilish section of dirt road reserved for experienced riders. From El Angel, you'll take a paved highway to drop several thousand feet into a new climate. You'll experience a huge change from the high elevation rainforest - you're now in the very arid desert.
