Tour Overview

This self-guided motorcycle adventure tour is designed to take you on Ecuador's best-paved backroads and to enjoy the most unique and comfortable lodging available in the country.   The ride explores the three distinct "worlds' of continental Ecuador - the Andes - the Amazon and the Pacific Coast.  It is a tour that is excellent for 2-up riding and groups of friends looking for a great journey and very comfortable accommodations.

You’ll have a map and GPS with pre-programmed routes for each day, a hotel to aim for each night and all the time in the world to get there.

Ecuador Freedom provides a "Road Book" with thorough, day-to-day information including descriptions of local highlights, history, and "hidden gems" that aren’t common knowledge. You can use this information to tailor your days' rides, including as much or as little as you like. You'll have the support of the country's most experienced and largest motorcycle and 4x4 tour operator at all times through the provided local prepaid cell phone.

The tour has opportunities for several off-bike activities as well, including the hot springs at Papallacta, a motorized canoe expedition in the Amazon jungle with a native guide, zip lines across the Pastaza River Gorge, surfing in the Pacific and a traditional cleansing ceremony by the Tsachilla Tribe of the Ecuadorian Rainforest.  You can ride it with any of our motorcycles or 4x4's.  Have a look and let us know if you have any questions. We hope to see you on the Backroads of Ecuador soon!

Day 1 - Valle Hermoso

Elevation Profile - Day 1

Quito - Inti-ñan - Valle Hermoso

You'll begin your 10-day "Backroads of Ecuador" self-guided tour from our shop in Quito, Ecuador. In 1978, Quito became the first place on the planet to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for having the best-preserved historic center in all of Latin America. Quito is high on the Altiplano Plateau (the highest capital city in the world) in the Andes at 9,350 feet.  We suggest that you arrive a day or two early to experience our magnificent capital city while getting acclimated to a high altitude before beginning the tour.  Our shop is located in the most luxurious and modern part of the city, so we suggest you get a hotel near our shop and take advantage of all that this city has to offer.

During the first morning of the tour, you’ll be outfitted with the motorcycle of your choice and given a thorough orientation answering all questions concerning local customs, rules of the road, riding signals, Ecuadorian driver courtesies, and more.  road out of Quito to west for motorcycle adventureWe'll review the route with you in detail, providing you with your pre-programmed GPS navigation unit along with a "Road Book" containing daily maps including descriptions of local highlights, history, gas stations, suggested lunch stops and other "hidden gems" that aren’t common knowledge. You can use this information to tailor your days, including as much or as little as you like.  We'll show you how to call us using the pre-paid cell phone and what to do if you have any problems along the way.  You'll head out on the bike, taking the tunnel which is just a few blocks from our office, that takes you to the highway out of the city with very little traffic.

Inti-ñan means “path of the Sun” in the Quechua language and the Inti-ñan Museum is situated directly on the Equator. The indigenous peoples have revered this site for thousands of years and you will learn how ancient people came to understand that this was the center of the world centuries before the advent of modern geography or GPS devices. During your first stop directly on the Equator “red line” you will experiment with gravity, including witnessing how water drains either clockwise or counter-clockwise depending on which side of the Equator you are standing. You will also have the opportunity to see how the indigenous populations of Ecuador live by visiting models of their homes. This will enable you to better understand the cultures and ways of life that you will experience as we pass through the various regions.

kashama lodge watefrall and motorcycle adventureDeparting the Inti-ñan Museum, you are now officially outside of the Quito metropolitan region, and have begun riding in the Northern Hemisphere. The second suggested stop is to view the beautiful Pululahua Crater Geo-Botanical Reserve, a crater formed by a volcanic eruption 2,500 years ago. From there, head onto the western slopes of the Andes that are full of dense, green forests and steep mountains. The roads have been recently paved and riding these sharp curves is certain to be exhilarating fun.

You can have lunch in the garden of a fantastic restaurant in the heart of the cloud forest.   You'll watch in amazement as hundreds of colorful birds surround us as you enjoy the local cuisine.

From here, you'll continue descending the western slopes of the Andes, passing several dairy and fruit farms and small welcoming villages.  The air will be a bit thicker and warmer as you descend to the lowlands.  cloudforest western slopes ecuadsor motorcyle adventure tour

Check into a very unique hotel and spa - built right into a waterfall.   The Kashama Resort was designed based on the layout of the cliffside town of Manarola, Italy.  It resembles an artist’s palette; vibrant buildings jostle each other for space.  The first thing you'll probably want to do is jump in for a swim in its inviting, private waterfall.  You'll be dining here with its first class service. Dinner is included.

What to Expect

This self-guided motorcycle (or 4x4) adventure tour will start and end in our offices located in the fashionable "La Carolina" neighborhood of Quito - close to several hotels, parks, shopping malls, restaurants, and museums.

Before your departure (on the day prior or the morning of departure), you will be provided a detailed and thoughtful presentation on Ecuadorian rules of the road, customs and courtesies. You'll be instructed on how to operate your pre-programmed GPS unit and given a packet that includes your prepaid hotel vouchers and daily map sheets with points of interest, descriptions of local highlights information and "hidden gems" that aren't common knowledge.  You can use this information to tailor your day - including as much or as little as you like. The route will be reviewed with you in detail to provide you with additional useful information about the timing, suggestions for lunch stops and where to get gas along the way.

On the morning of your departure, you will be provided the adventure motorcycle or 4x4 vehicle of your choice, fitted with waterproof luggage system, a first aid kit, a tank bag if you want one, spare innertubes (or tire repair kit) and a set of tools. Besides, you will have a prepaid cell phone to call us for support at any time during your trip.  We will carefully review the bike (or 4x4) with you using our multi-point checklist to be sure that everything is in perfect working order before your departure and that you know what to do in case of an emergency or breakdown.

The route you will follow over the next ten days is based on several years' of experience and riding these routes many times on our guided version of the tour.  The journey is made of mostly paved roads with very little traffic.  There are several stops available which are marked on the GPS unit and the daily route sheets. It is up to you to decide if you want to check them out.

You will have many opportunities for amazing photos and stops in remote villages where visitors are infrequent. Locals are friendly and the areas visited are very safe with meager crime rates.

During your ride, Ecuador Freedom staff will monitor your daily progress using an onboard GPS satellite tracking system and can assist you by telephone if you need to change your route, need roadside assistance or help in any way.

Upon returning, you will have access to our honor bar, jacuzzi, hot shower and staff that can assist you with your next destination.

Weather and Temperatures

Weather and temperature ranges in Ecuador are generally the same year round. In the highlands, you can expect the chance of passing showers but rarely a full day of rain. Prospects for a full day of rain are more likely on the western slopes of the Andes in March, April and early May. This ride will be in elevations of sea level (where temperatures can be around 90 degrees Fahrenheit) to 14,500 (where temperatures can be in the 30's Fahrenheit). Dressing in layers is recommended.  Please see this article for more information about the weather in Ecuador.

Throughout the tour, you will stay in higher end, carefully selected,  non-touristy, biker-friendly, inns, hotels and lodges. See this page for details, photos, and links to the accommodations provided.  Ecuador Freedom has the right to substitute accommodations of equal quality due to availability and will notify you of these changes.

Packing List and Preparation
Ecuador Freedom will provide you with detailed information to prepare for the ride, including a packing list.  You should know how to make general motorcycle repairs and maintenance and to be able to change an innertube (click for a video tutorial).  Before you travel, we recommend that you familiarize yourself in advance with these recommended guidebooks and maps.

To protect yourself from this loss of your deposit, it is up to you to secure travel insurance that covers cancellations due to health problems, civil unrest, acts of God, family tragedies or problems with flight departures, etc.

We recommend Ripcord Travel Insurance.  They provide very extensive travel insurance plus have outstanding repatriation and assistance in an emergency.  To purchase, just go to this page
